Q: Some songs in playlist will not play

I have a playlist of a group I like. I started with several albums on Apple music and created a playlist for them. When I start to play i notice some of the songs are in grey and do not play. Why is that? Then, I found several albums that were not in Apple Music and added them to iTunes in my iMac.  I add to that playlist. As best I can tell all the songs on the playlist in my computer added from the albums on my computer are there and can be played, but there are many songs on the playlist in my devices that are in grey and can't be played. How can I get the songs in the playlist in my computer into the playlist on my devices. I have the latest software for all the hardware and apps.

Thanks

Carl

    Hello Carl Sutherland,

To recap, music on your devices is greyed out, but is playable in your iTunes Library on your computer. I would recommend syncing your music to your devices again. You may need to un-sync the current music on your devices first and then re-sync the music.

The following article has the steps to sync your music to your iOS devices. To un-sync the music, remove the check in the box in front of the words "Sync Music" and click "Apply" in the lower right corner of iTunes.

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB

    Best Regards

I filled out a detailed message and clicked "Reply" but I don't think that happened. This is a check

    Try again.

I don't think your response is helpful. I can not sync music from my computer to my devices with Apple Music working. I think all syncing is done in the cloud. It may not be possible to do what I want which is to have Apple music working on my computer and devices, then have a playlist accessible from my devices composed of both songs added from the Apple Music catalogue and from my computer for that groups songs not in the Apple Music catalogue. Is that possible? I also suspect that if I turn off Apple Music the songs from Apple music in the playlist will disappear from my computer so I can not manually sync the entire playlist with Apple Music turned off.

So, is there some way to have a playlist on my devices with Apple Music functioning that includes the groups songs not in the Apple Music Catalogue? If not how can I listen to the songs not in Apple Music on my devices as a separate playlist?

    Thanks

    Carl

Thank you for taking the time to provide our community with more details about what you are looking for Carl.

Make sure that iCloud Music Library is turned on for all of your devices. Then you should be able to use this article to help add songs to the My Music tab so you can play all your music from all your devices.

Add music from the Apple Music catalog to your library on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC

To add songs, albums and playlists from Apple Music to My Music, make sure to turn on iCloud Music Library on your device.

    Add songs, albums, and playlists

You can add songs, albums, playlists, and music videos to your library from anywhere in Apple Music. Items you add on one device are also added to your other devices that are signed in to Apple Music.

    Regards

    ERIN,

Thank you for replying, but apparently I still can't get across the problem I am having. I am NOT having problems with the albums and songs in Apple Music being in and playable in all my devices. I have albums and songs in my computer obtained from sources other than Apple Music and NOT available in Apple Music that I want to get into my playlists. Is there anyway of getting them into playlists on my devices with the songs and albums I DID obtain from Apple Music.

Again, I suspect it is not possible to get into any program in Apple Music songs and albums from other sources and not found already in Apple Music. Is there?

    Thanks

You should be able to add songs from other sources - CDs or other websites - into the iTunes library on your computer (assuming that they are in a format that iTunes accepts) and then update your iCloud Music Library to include those songs. (Click on FILE/LIBRARY/UPDATE ICLOUD MUSIC LIBRARY in the menu bar at the top.)

Once the songs are in your library - and successfully uploaded/matched to your iCloud Music Library, you should be able to add them to a playlist and have them available to play on your other devices. You might have to click on the Update iCloud Music Library a second time after adding the songs to a playlist, but it "should" happen automatically.

I have a library of over 55,000 tracks, and quite a large number of them are not available through Apple Music and I can still listen to them on my iPhone and iPad. However I will occasionally run into a track that since it is not available through Apple Music, even though I own a copy of the track and have it in my Mac's iTunes Library, it still won't play properly on my iPhone/iPad. But that is the exception - it generally works OK.

Thank you. This seems to have solved the problem for three of my four IOS Devices. However, my most recent one, iPhone 6s, is still stuck on the old lineup. My playlist on my iMac has 195 songs in it and my iPhones 5s and 6+ and my iPad also have what looks like functioning 195 songs. My iPhone 6s is stuck at the old line up of 135 songs. I have synced several times to my iMac as well as quiting the iPhone and reopening it, but no joy. What is stopping my iPhone 6s from syncing all 195 songs like my other IOS devices.

    Thanks again
