Q: Could Not Connect To Apple TV

As the title says...'Could Not Connect To Apple TV'

Its the latest 4th Gen and i just all of a sudden today get this message. No changes made to anything. Airplay works fine on my 3rd Gen upstairs. Switch to 'Living Room' and cannot connect. Been working fine for months and months.

Tried restarting everything. All is up to date. Disabled Firewall...(don't see why that makes a diff when it has been working fine) Nothing happens..Same message...

Am i going to have to do a reset here?? Or is it something else.

Any help appreciated many thanks,

Mac.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

    1. Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
    2. Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
    3. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    4. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    5. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    6. Restart your mobile device.

I would like to add that connecting via Airplay in iTunes works fine...my iPhone 6S connects and plays ok...so this obviously now is pointing toward my Macbook Air.

Thanks for the quick reply but i have done these steps..The problem now appears to be pointing toward my Macbook Air, I can air play on the Apple TV with iPad, iPhone and with the Air via iTunes, Just to simply straight Airplay so desktop is on the TV is not possible.

Just to clarify, what you call straight AirPlay is actually AirPlay mirroring. So you can mirror your display to the ATV 3 and not to the ATV 4, correct? And you can AirPlay from iTunes to ATV 4? So ATV 4 is not rejecting the Mac connection outright. Please check the software versions on your Mac and on ATV 4. Try a lower screen resolution, to be sure it's not too high for ATV and its TV.

If you are still having problems, try turning off bluetooth if it's enabled, also try using 802.11n for wifi if you are currently using either 802.11b or 802.11g.

There are no options for mirroring although it is turned on in display preferences.

On the ATV3 Airplay connects no problem from the Macbook Air and all other devices.

On the ATV4 all devices connect expect the Macbook Air. It does connect via iTunes though and i can play my music and movies for example. So as you say it is not rejecting the Macbook Air Outright. Baffled. All been working fine and no changes have been made to anything. It just started this morning.

NB. My iMac 27in Airplays on ATV4 also no problem. So what is it with the Macbook Air all of a sudden?

Are you able to mirror the Macbook Air on ATV 3? Or, as you say, are there no mirroring options?

Please report the software versions on ATV 4 and Macbook Air. An update on one or the other may have put them out of sync.

How old is the Macbook Air? See the requirements at the bottom of Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV - Apple Support.

Have you installed any third-party display apps on the MBA, such as Duet, AirParrot, etc. If you have, have they been completely unimstalled?

Then I'm inclined to think it's your network rather than the Mac

I Think more it's the compatibility between the MacBook and the ATV4... No changes have been made to the network and it's been working fine for months. If the ATV updated maybe something not compatible.

THe MacBook Air is late 2014. All up to date with no third party display apps installed. Never have been. The ATV4 is at the latest software version.

THe the mirroring display option only appears once you are connected via Airplay. This appears when I am connected to ATV3 and mirroring works fine. Can't connect with ATV4 so won't see that.

AsI said all other devices function normally on the ATV4... iMac, iPhone, iPad

So, you do not see the ATV 4 in the main menu where you could enable mirroring, but you do see it in the AirPlay menu in iTunes. Is that correct?

I click on Living Room and I get the message cannot connect..

I click on my ATV3 Bedroom for example all is fine.

In iTunes..I click on the airplay icon and Living room..fine also...can play music through it etc..

Totally had enough now....The next stage is to completely reset the Macbook Air..Have reset ATV4, Router, Renamed, Reset Network Settings everywhere...

Will put Macbook  back to factory settings now!! Increasingly frustrated with Apple Lately...And this just happened all out of the blue. No settings were changed anyway on any device!!.Probably the automatic updates that have messed everything up..Well done Apple.
