Q: Which format should I convert my MTS/M2TS footage to?

Hi there

Last Saturday we (a group of 5 Amateurs) filmed a complete rock festival using consumer-level camcorders.

Thsi time, I wasn't the one to import the footage, it was a friend who uses Sony Vegas under Windows 8.

All the files he then gave to me (some 500GB) are in MTS/MT2S format (except the GoPro footage which is in MP4).

Now, as FCPX doesn't understand these files when drag'n dropped onto its interface, I have to convert these.

There will be a maximum of 7 parallel takes to cut the best moment from.

I read I could ideally be converting the whole lot into ProRes 422 format but I'm afraid this footage might end up cluttering my word disc (a LaCie Thunderbolt 2/6TB striped disc which can read 350 to 400MB/s).

I also read I could work using the much lighter H264/MP4 format.

Now I would like to know what would be the most convenient... even if the final rendering has to take days, it's still an option if I can otherwise save a little disc space and still work conveniently.

Thanks for your advice.
