Q: Contacts v8.2: entering and editing is very, very slow

After upgrading to OS X Yosemite 04.2016, entering or editing data in Contacts v8.2 is unbearably slow. Even selecting a field or copying and pasting is ridiculously time consuming.

I do not sync Contacts with iCloud or any other cloud service. I have followed instructions from previous posts without success. Today’s Etrecheck report:

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

I created a new standard non-administrator user. This user did NOT log in to iCloud. Contacts works fine in normal start-up mode, but in safe mode there’s lots of strange stuff going on with both this user and my usual administrator account.

Starting up in safe mode with either user account was very strange: after log-in, the screen rolled through bands of grey and white before bringing up the desktop. In Contacts, trying to do anything — to search or to create a new user or to enter data in a text field or tab to the next field — would cause one or all of the columns to “roll” — they’d go blank and then the list(s) would roll out, go blank and roll out — several times before settling. The cursor key would make the whole text field flash on and off. Impossible to work with.

Notes behave the same way in Safe Mode. Couldn’t type two keystrokes before all three columns were disappearing and reappearing. Text was highlighted in yellow. Unusable.

Starting up normally to my usual user account, Contacts was just as slow as it has been for the last two months. No change. I didn’t even bother to import the .abbu archive exported from the new user account.

Both user accounts have the same installed applications (I’m the only user). Login Items have been turned off. All third-party System Preference Extensions have been turned off.

Re EtreCheck, I can’t find the (2) Kernel Extensions or the failed Adobe Launch Agent; to remove them and I have searched but can’t find out how to remove the Adobe Flash 3rd Party Preference Pane.

    See it this helps.

    Adobe Flash Uninstaller

To manually remove the preference pane, go to your hard drive level Library/PreferencePanes and see if it is there.

See if you can find the file(s) using one of these programs. If you go Finder/View/Show Path Bar, it will show you where it is located.

Easy Find was unable to locate the palm kernel extension. the alsoft kernel extension is located on a back-up disk and irrelevant. I was able to remove:

        [failed]    com.adobe.ARMDCHelper.cc24aef4a1b90ed56a...plist (2016-06-09) (Launch Agent)

[failed]    com.adobe.ARM.[...].plist (2012-12-10) (User Launch Agent)

CCC User Agent    Application  (/Applications/Carbon Copy Cloner.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems/CCC User Agent.app) (User Login Item)

Flash Player (2016-06-13) (3rd Party Preference Pane)

Since creating that new user account, every time I log in I get a message about “Messages and FaceTime” being logged into by another Mac.

In my original user account, Contacts/AddressBook is unusable and Mail began having steadily worsening problems about a week ago: Flagged folder count is (29) when there are only (15) messages in the folder; Connection Doctor shows all SMTPs for IMAP accounts have failed but incoming is OK; Mailbox menu “Online Status” displays all accounts as “Offline”; iCloud SMTP server is “None”; accessing the “Accounts” preference pane within Mail’s preferences —not Sys Prefs — gets a 10-second beachball; unable to print an invoice from iTunes Store; shut-down is sluggish.

I ran EtreCheck (4) times today.

For the 1st test, Mail, Contacts, Calendar, TextEdit and Firefox were running. The only red flag was:

    Top Processes by CPU: ⓘ

            66%    accountsd

            32%    SystemUIServer

            12%    securityd

            12%    kernel_task

            7%    Mail

For the 2nd test, Contacts, Calendar, TextEdit and Firefox were running. Mail was shut down. No red flags:

    Top Processes by CPU: ⓘ

            8%    WindowServer

            2%    Creative Cloud

            2%    kernel_task

            1%    fontd

            1%    Adobe CEF Helper(3)

For the 3rd test, Mail, Calendar, TextEdit and Firefox. Contacts was shut down:

    Top Processes by CPU: ⓘ

            77%    accountsd

            45%    SystemUIServer

            32%    mdworker(13)

            17%    securityd

            8%    WindowServer

The 4th test was the same as #3 with EtreCheck’s “digital signatures” option enabled:

    Top Processes by CPU: ⓘ

            73%    mdworker(6)
            69%    accountsd

            28%    SystemUIServer

            11%    securityd

            8%    WindowServer

What does all this mean? Scrapping the system, wiping the HD and reinstalling Yosemite are beginning to look like my only options.

Try uninstalling the above using the Developer's uninstall instructions.

I couldn’t find any developer’s uninstall instructions, but I removed it anyway. The lag in creating and entering data into a Contact is much improved. But my template file is still messed up. Do you know where that file is stored?

Do you think my issues could be caused because I have both FontExplorer X Pro and Font Book installed?

I deleted the recently created user account but this message still pops up whenever I reboot:

    Screen Shot 2016-06-28 at 20.25.43.png

And the System Preferences show up spontaneously whenever I reboot which they never did before.

All my SMTP servers are still unable to connect and no matter where I enter them or how many times, the server passwords are dropped as soon as I enter them.

Calendar no longer opens to Today but to 06.21.2016.

Reference the discussion you linked to, as Kurt Land posted, having 2 font managers isn't a good idea.

I think I'd try reinstalling the OS since so many applications are giving you trouble. Try running the combo update first to see if that helps.

    10.10.5 Combo Update

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.
