Q: Library/Files in folder on external Hard drive

The question is, When importing media from a folder on a External hard drive to a library on the same drive, is that doubling the amount of space on that drive based on the size of the original files, if I choose the Copy Option in the import window vs the Leave in Place Option? I know, it should be obvious, don't rip me a new one, I'm just checking?

What kind of folder is it? Is it a camera structure folder? If yes, then you have to copy, and the media is doubled. If it's just a Finder folder with media files in it, the media is duplicated using hard links. It appears in both places, but only uses the drive space of one folder.

Yes. It will double the amount of used space for that media.

Thanks Russ, so the opposite would be true if I used the leave in place option, FCPX would then create a link to the files in use in the library to those in the folder on the same HD, and not double the space?

Correct. It will create symlinks to your original media files with negligible increase in space used.
