Q: Which Mac OS do I need?

What OS do you like? the latest Mac OS is El Capitan. you can try to update the software of you Mac by downloading the software on the Mac App Store

I would download the El Capitan installer from the Mac App Store in Yosemite and then create a bootable USB media using:

Then boot from that install media and format and then then install EL Capitan on an internal disk.

well,Joe, seeing as how Yosemite was a digital download (no discs on that one either), you'd have to go with either Snow Leopard or Lion. SL is on DVD and should be around $20. For Lion, you'd have to call Apple and arrange for a digital download code to be emailed to you. Maybe your local Apple Store could do that, but I'm not 100% sure on that

To install Lion you would first have to install Snow Leopard and then purchase the download code

and install using that download code in the Mac App Store.

Note the currently the Apple links for Snow Leopard and Lion say they are no longer available.

You can try calling Apple or try Googling for a Snow Leopard disk.
