Q: Laptop crashes frequently since latest OS update (version 10.11.5)

Ever since the latest OS update (version 10.11.5 (15F34) ) my macbook pro has crashed a dozen times for no reason, and sends me multiple error issues after crashing my programs. What the heck is going on? A $2100 laptop should not be doing this. It is beginning to become more frequent in between crashes. It is making me very upset, I've paid a lot of money to have this laptop and haven't had it for even a year yet.

Is anyone else experiencing program crashing or random shut downs for no reason since the latest update? What should I do?? The nearest Apple store is over an hour away!

If your machine was purchased new less than a year ago, it is warrantied by Apple.

You can contact Apple Support and seek help there.

    CosmicAcorn,

In addition to what sberman has recommended, and if you are still under warranty, please take full advantage of your warranty, and take your machine in for a full, free evaluation.

As in any hair endeavors be sure to make a fun back-up of your data, a second back-up on a different device is always a good move.

There are a couple of things to try.

Make sure your OS is up to date:

    Apple logo, Software update

Could you post a few of the panic reports.  Each report you choose to post in a separate reply would be nice

    Kernel Panic reports: "/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports"

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546>

    <http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553>

The panic report should have "panic" in the file name.

Finally could you post the output from EtreCheck in a separate reply

That might tell us if you have 3rd party additions that might be responsible for your system crashes.

If it is not under warranty, or you can't easily get to an Apple Store, please post a kernel panic log if you have one.

You can find it in the Console App under the System Diagnostic Reports section.

When you open Console, make sure the Log List is showing--if not click the button in the toolbar to show it.

Scroll down to the System Diagnostic Reports section and click the Disclosure triangle next to the heading to show the contents of that section.

Look for a panic log which starts with "Kernel"

Select it and it will display in the right-hand pane.

Select everything after Anonymous UUID line, copy it, and paste it into a reply here.

If you get an error when trying to post it here, you can post it to a site like http://pastebin.com

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.
