Q: Panic Report, GPU Panic

Hello.

I can't work on my macbook pro at all during the last month. It reboots a lot of times during a day, 5–6 times every hour when I work with Adobe Photoshop CC, InDesign or Autodesk Maya. I get a message about my computer was restarted because of a problem. And always the same problem — Panic Report GPU Panic and so on. I don't know what to do with the problem.

MBP (15-inch, Mid 2010) OS X EI Capitan 10.11.5

You may have to see if an SMC reset may help. Certain models of MacBook Pro

with dual graphic capabilities had some issues; so not sure how yours compares.

    • Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

    • How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

    • MacBook Pro: How to determine which graphics processor is in use - Apple Support

    • Set graphics performance on MacBook Pro - Apple Support

The one you have could allow for automatic selection of graphic processor; you

can limit that by a few settings or in how you use the computer. One aspect of

the graphic (base mode) can rely on a percentage of standard memory RAM in

that is shared with that base graphic unit. A secondary unit may use fixed memory.

Your computer appears to have the maximum standard RAM (8GB) installed.

Does your Activity Monitor indicate any other uses of system resources that may

hamper the overall performance or GPU? Some hardware is shared... Also, there

are some extensions and other applications that could affect your entire OS X.

    Good luck!

Actually, I made a reset of the SMC recently, but unfortunately it didn't help me. So I'm going to reset NVRAM, maybe it gets something. I hope so.

K Shaffer, thanks a lot for helping!

You have the misfortune of having a model identifier 6.2 MBP which is having GPU problems. There was a replacement program on these models but that has expired.

You have the following options: You may have the logic board replaced but it will be at your expense.

You may download and install the following application which will enable you to disengage the discrete GPU and operate with only the integrated one. This will be at the expense of graphics performance.

    https://gfx.io/

    Ciao.

    Thank you OGELTHORPE.
I will try to use that app of course, but for my purposes I think it won't be enough to use only integrated video card.

Then it becomes a choice of a new logic board of a newer MBP.

You can bring the MBP to an Apple store genius bar and have the MBP tested for free.  You will get a repair price quote so then you may make an informed decision.

    Ciao.

I have the same issue with that laptop. But I managed to get the panics to a workable level: about once or twice a week. The panic seems to be triggered with some actions. Exposé for instance - so I disabled that. Twitter seemed to be causing it at some point, so I had to use another client, but after the Twitter client got updated it didn't result in panics. Extensive scrolling in programs might also cause panics. It might also help to check your logs (start Console to see them) and locate frequent errors in certain program. I had quite some old software and extensions installed which didn't help the stability of my MBP. Removed most of them just by searching on Google on the errors.

The problem is the soldering on the GPU board - due to environmental reasons it contains less lead. The soldering breaks due to thermal stress. With my 2007 MBP I had the same problem and 'resoldered' the GPU board by heating it in an oven. That did work for a couple of months. Then the same procedure had to be done again. Never did it with my 2010 MBP though.

As of now, I'm just wishing my MBP will keep going until the new MBP is released. As I had problems with discrete graphics in my 2007 and 2010 MBPs I'm not too sure I'll have discrete graphics in my next MBP.

By the way, do install gfxCardStatus (see link Dimson). It does improve stability. I use it to keep the MBP from switching from one card to another.

Good luck with your MBP. Mine got tested during the recall period by an Apple genius and the result was: your computer is not affected by this problem. Only after the recall period ended my MBP started to experience this problem. Next time I'll ask for a written confirmation from the Apple genius as I'm not amused.

    Rembert, thanks.

Recently I made a reset of SMC, NVRAM and installed gfxCardStatus. I noticed that system started to work better but sometimes when I work with Photoshop, Macbook reboots. And the problem appears during my work with Photoshop only. As for me it's an unclear situation. I have worked on this MBP for more than 5 years in a row and almost without any problem, but now I have it.

From the panic report, unfortunately, I can understand nothing. Maybe I should check the logs but I'm not sure that it will be clear for me. I would install an old version of Photoshop to check maybe the problem in it, but now I can't do it straight from CreativeCloud, as far as I know.

There's really no doubt: the words "GPU Panic" at the start of the panic log, in combination with this particular model of MBP, can only mean one thing: the GPU is failing. You cannot solve this with any type of software.

Esquared, hello and thanks for your answer.

Okay, if the main problem is the hardware, let it be. But why does it happen now, not year before, three or five? It's unclear for me. Hardware works or not, there is no third case, isn't it?

Hardware works or not, there is no third case, isn't it?

This could turn into an interesting philosophical discussion. But sadly there indeed is a third option: any hardware can (and will!) fail at some point. (The fourth option: hardware repairing itself is quite rare however. )

As I can see hardware world is full of surprises. But in fact, I can't wait for a miracle, when my MBP fixes itself sometime. Because my work definitely will not wait for it. If it is out of order then I have to fix it by myself.

In my initial response I indicated that the only permanent repair is to replace the logic board with a functional one.  Though tedious, it can be done by a reasonably mechanically inclined person.  You might shop the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com web sites for a replacement logic board.

    Ciao.

I am having similar problems. They just started yesterday, never happened before.

I noticed that they occur when the mac was running super hot.

Someone here noticed that it might have to do with which kernel extensions are loaded: fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

But elsewhere, people have mentioned some instability in El Capitan.

Funny how this problem starts appearing months after my apple care runs out...
