I can see why it would be important to have this issue happen on your Mac. Using iTunes to sync is a main feature of the program and I'll be more than happy to help out.
It is best to start out with the basics. Let's update iTunes and the iPhone to make sure they’re both on the latest software.
Update iTunes: Get the latest version of iTunes - Apple Support
Update iPhone: Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If both of these are up to date, let's check and make sure your iMac is also up to date. You can do that following this article: Update the software on your Mac - Apple Support

Jun 17, 2016 11:38 PM in response to racarreraby Mike Johnson12,Launch iTunes - then plug in your iPhone and hold down the 'option' 'CMD' keys at the same time - this will prevent a sync from taking place with iTunes - see if you still crash iTunes.
If you did not crash iTunes then go to iTunes prefs > Devices and tick the 'Prevent ....... Automatically' check box so your devices will not auto sync.
Try a different cable.
