Q: Files importing (.avi /.mp4)

Why importing media as .mp4 or .avi is so hard to do whereas FCPX technical specification say that avi and mp4 wrapper are recognized ?

It's still impossible to open a .avi or .mp4 directly from FCPX without use a third-party app.

Is there any plug-in to add to that FCPX can directly open these media without third-party applications ?

The mp4 wrapper is recognised but the format of the contained video within that wrapper has also to be one of the recognised ones.  The list of supported formats is at:

Final Cut Pro X: Supported media formats

Apple issues updates from time to time to support new formats.  If you are using one of these it's worth checking that there is not an update waiting to be installed from the App Store.

Thanks for the quick answer Geoff.

I agree with you, but the media I want to import who are in a .avi wrapper are H.264-MPEG4 AVC codec who is also supposed to be recognized ( am I right ? ), and FCPX  doesn't want open it.

I also checked the sound codec...

It seems to be very difficult to open a  " video compression standard in widespread use for recording, distribution, and Internet streaming of high-definition (HD) video"

See if MPEG Streamclip will open it and let you convert it to a QuickTime movie.

Or, if you want to upload a few seconds to Dropbox, we could test a few things.

    Hi Tom Wolsky.

Yes, QT Player open it after a few second/minutes of conversion.

I read a lot of about the third-party app and if I seek an answer in this forum it's to do without another intermediate steps, since I see no reason why FCPX do not open this media respecting readable formats and codec imposed by Apple.

TThe QT player is converting it so it can open It.

Afraid thers hers no way to fcp with this media without external conversion. You can probably batch convert to ProRes in the Finder.
