Now are you being asked to create this passcode or are you simply being asked to enter in the assigned passcode? If you're being asked to create one, there is an option in the creation process on the page in blue that reads Passcode Options. You can choose a 4 digit here if you would like, though it is suggested for security these days to at least do the 6 digit.
You can remove the passcode yourself if you are not familiar with it enough to get back into the iPhone by following the steps listed in the article above. You can then restore from your most recent backup that you made through iTunes or through iCloud. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support
If you did not have your iCloud account setup on the iPhone and do not have access to a computer, you can contact Apple to setup an appointment for your local Apple Retail Store. Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support. You can also schedule this yourself through their website. http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
If you are not familiar with the passcode, they will follow the steps listed in the first article to remove it. They have no means to keep your content on the device during this process as the passcode lock is doing as it is designed and does not allow for access to the internal contents unless the passcode is entered correctly. I would hate for you to run in there thinking otherwise.
Best of luck
