    Just what do you mean?

    Where is this indicated?

    What are you expecting?

on start up, the Private setting is enabled and needs to be disabled.....I was expecting it to be disabled as a default, like my other Apple devices

If you enable private browsing and then close Safari, private browsing will be on when you reopen Safari.

If your problem is that you go to Safari and then go to normal browsing and then shutdown safari and reopen Safari and private browsing is on try:

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    - Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

    - Restore from backup. See:

thanks for the advice.  my problem was that the Private browsing had never been enabled so I was surprised when it automatically defaulted to it - is this an iOS glitch?

I have not seen this problem posted before and thus it does not seem to be a general iOS problem
