You could always make a screen cap of the map. Hold down the sleep and home keys quickly, like you'd press down the shutter of a camera. You should see a white flash and the cap will be saved in your photos app.

Apple's built-in Maps app does not allow you to save maps for offline use.

Some third-party apps may have this functionality though. Google Maps offers this function, but there are probably many more third-party applications that can do the same.

Thanks Skydiver119. This is a bit restrictive as you can only save the map when wifi is available of somewhere you hope to be in the near future. I need something a bit more flexible in case travel plans change. 'best, jonowra

At your suggestion I went looking for an app which would suit. Found plenty at app store for a cost but got a freebie which looks good. It's called 'maps.me' and has world wide maps available. Also looks a bit more detailed than google maps. Thanks, jonowra

As crazy as it sound you simply cannot ! It's not available in the iPhone either.

Solution : use Google Maps. You'll be able to save several areas for offline use with POIs and driving instruction. Only traffic cannot be displayed (of course since you're offline ;-).

Here Maps is a free app that allows you to download worldwide map (broken down by country, state etc) for offline use.
