Q: Using El Capitan and suddenly cannot send emails via gmail but I do receive emails.

Using an iMac (late 2015) with El Capitan 10.11.5 and gmail.  Have been using gmail for about 3 months with no problems.  About 10 days ago, gmail stopped working.  Two days later, I could receive email but not send.  Outgoing server says Google (offline).  I have re-entered all the info, turned accounts off and on, tried entering 8.8.8.8 with no change.  I can send email from my iPad and my iPhone

Using El Capitan and suddenly cannot send emails via gmail but I do receive emails.  I have tried various strategies based on internet searches but cannot get Google to be online for the outgoing mail.  Any suggestions?

Have done that repeatedly.  Outgoing mail says Google (offline) and is gray (not black) so I can't edit it.  I have tried changing SMTP server but still nothing.

Go into the Edit SMTP settings. Most likely you just need to add the password under Advanced tab.

    EDIT SMTP SETTINGS

In Accounts window > Outgoing Mail Server SMTP:  select to Edit SMTP Server list... from popup.

Select account in the list.(It's not uncommon to find extra SMTP servers listed. When you remove account, Mail does not delete the smtp info. You might need to do some clean up in the list to remove the extras.)

    Under Advanced Tab:

Apple defaults to the default ports (25,465, 587) but some servers prefer a custom port. Check to see what port they recommend. Gmail for example likes 465, Outlook.com 587.

Verify if your server require SSL.

User Name. Enter full email address  eg.  UserName@gmail.com

Add password if it is blank.(If you have two step authentication setup, you'll need to get an app specific password  more info)

Open Connection Doctor under Window in the Menu bar.

Do you see green light now for your account SMTP?

Outgoing mail says Google (offline) and is gray (not black) so I can't edit it.

Go to the "Mail" Preferences->Accounts Tab

Select the account on the left side,

Click on "Advanced" tab along the top right.

Deselect the box "Automatically detect and maintain account settings".

Select the General icon up top or another account after making the change. This will force the Mail app to prompt you to save the chnages.

After that you should be able to edit the account. If not, in SMTP window remove Gmail's server then add it back.

    Account information tab: smtp.gmail.com

Advanced: Port 465 check use SSL

    Authentication: password

Enter your email and password. You might need app specific password if you have two step.

    Assign to the Gmail account.
