Q: Anyone out there a Windows 10 user having difficulty getting iTunes to recognize an iPod Classic?

It appears that iTunes does not recognize an iPod Classic as a device.  Are there specific drivers that need to be installed for the iPod Classic to be recognized as a device with memory?

iPod classic, iPod classic-firmware version 1.1.2

Try Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support and see if it then shows up.

I have tried that twice but no luck.  I'm now scanning my iPod for any viruses assuming that this may be why Windows 10 give me a message that the device needs to be scanned.  iTunes doesn't recognize it but W10 Device Manage lists it as an Apple Mobile device under USB devices.

Hmm, if it is an iPod classic it should probably show under portable devices with the name of the device. Looking at an iPod nano it is using two Microsoft driver files, rather than Apple's drivers for iOS devices. Removing the current drivers and letting the device be redetected may help.

I deleted the drivers a few times and once it showed APPLE iPOD mobile device driver but never again.  That driver still didn't show up in the iTunes menu for devices.  Actually, no devices and no options showed up most of the time.  Once, it asked "Transfer purchases to iTunes" and clicking on that didn't last long as there were no purchases on the iPod.  It seems to me that iTunes on the Windows 10 platform isn't designed to recognize an iPod.  If it had the correct drivers that would interface with the USB connection, then iTunes should get the device information.  Windows recognizes a device on the USB but doesn't always knows it's an iPod and even if it does, that one time, iTunes still doesn't recognize it.  One suggestion over the community was to try a new cable but that isn't as simple as it sounds.

An erratic connection in which iTunes has seen it at least once does suggest a cable/connection issue. Check the docking port for fluff and if found tease out gently with a thin sliver of card or plastic. If that doesn't help try to borrow a known good cable for testing before you spend out on another. See also Corrupt iPod Classic and post back your HDD stats just in case they have a story to tell.

OK, I used a "dust aerosol spray" to clean the connections in the iPod cable and the male/female connectors on the iPod side.  That did help and when the iPod connector is moved up and down slightly, Windows recognizes the USB device multiple times.  In Windows Device Manager, this time in installed WPD File System Volume Driver.  I selected UPDATE DRIVER and it said it was the latest.  However, at one previous time I saw the Apple Mobile Device Driver but it's gone now.  It didn't make a difference to iTunes though.  I checked out your Corrupt iPod Classic post and did the tests.  Here are my stats.

    Retracts: 1

    Reallocs: 0

    Pending Sectors: 0

    PowerOn Hours: 338

    Start/Stops: 8446

    Temp: Current 33c

    Temp: Min 14c

    Temp: Max 53c

I guess you would know if these mean anything.  Slow and steady plodding may win this race.  I have an APPLE fix-it dealer nearby so I may try that on Monday to see if I can have my cable tested or borrow one.  I don't know if they can run a test on the iPod Classic female connector but I'll try that as well.

Stats look OK, so it would seem to be all about the connection.

I'll have the connection and cord checked early next week and hopefully that will be the end of the problem.  I'm skeptical but time will tell.  Thanks for your knowledge and guidance.

You're welcome. Hopefully it is the cable which can be easily replaced.

I decided to purchase a replacement $15 cable and it connected to the base of the iPod tighter and it seems to have corrected a hardware connection problem.  I still got the message of "something wrong with USB device, scan your USB device".  I did that and saw that one virus was found and it was removed.  I don't know how that happens.  Still, iTunes doesn't see the device in the drop down menu.  However there are 2 new items.  One is that the iPod now shows "Synchronizing" in the screen and the devices drop down menu only shows "Transfer FSola's purchases".  Are the devices listed in my Apple ID account?  Do I need to register the iPod someplace?  Any additional help appreciated.

There is a mechanism that detects when a hard drive has been disconnected while data was being written to it, which will result in Windows prompting to scan for disc errors until such a scan has been performed. I would normally exclude AV software from scanning an iPod as it can interact with iTunes and trigger problems writing out data to the device. On connection the iPod will typically go into the synchronizing, do not disconnect state until you use iTunes to eject it. When a device is connected to iTunes one of the options in the devices menu should become Transfer purchases from <Name of device>.

There should be an icon for your device to the right of the media selection control. Click that icon to select the device and set up syncing options.

I did see the device symbol for my iPod when it was connected.  When I clicked on the device, there were no Syncing options.  The options show the Syncing in the list but it is shaded out and though the iPod does show up to the right of the media drop down list, it goes away when a song is started.  It just seems that the software just doesn't want to "exhibit" the syncing option or the device and it operates silently in the background?  I only get the "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected", "Sync only checked songs and video" is shaded out, "Convert higher bit rate songs, etc." is available and "Manually manage music and videos" is an option and "Enable Disk use" only is an option if the Manyally manage music and videos is not selected.  Any idea why the Syncing option is shaded out.  If it doesn't recognize a device, I guess it can't sync with it.  But the iPod icon does show up on connection but then goes away.

This is beginning to look like an issue with recent builds of Windows 10 generating a false alarm. Are you using Windows Insider? At the moment it looks like the only options are revert to an earlier build or wait for Microsoft to fix it.

I'm not using Windows Insider just Windows 10.  What do you mean revert to an earlier build?  Windows or iTunes?
