Q: Apple watch Sport Scratched

I have an Apple Watch Sport 42mm which was purchased just over six months ago and has been like all Apple products amazing until now!

I only wear it for lite use as I am an office worker and have not had a single scratch or mark in 6 months of owning it, I clean it nightly with a lint free cloth to ensure it is always looking good.

A Couple of weeks ago a couple of scratches appeared on the top and bottom rounded edges, these have got so bad now it looks like I fell over and we dragged do the road on the edges of it rendering the watch usless. I noticed the other day that my work shirt cuffs rubs the watch in the exact direction the scratches appear so made an appointment with Apple Genius Bar.

Took the watch to the Genius Bar today and expressed my concerns with the watch, it turns out Apple Watch is limited and therefore any damage is not covered but it could be sent for out of warranty repair at a cost (over half the value of a new watch).

Contacted online support same response as no way it would not scratch so easy as they have no reported cases and would be aware if there was.

Not sure what to do now as an Apple fan and house if full of Apple products, but this may be my last Apple purchase

To create damage to such a degree with only the cuffs of a shirt strikes me as not credible. Did you contact your shirt manufacturer? Anything can become scratched. I haven't found my Watch to be easily scratched despite wearing it for nearly a year during all kinds of activity.

i agree which is my concern, and leads to my concern with the watch surface as the watch had sustained no scratches at all in 6 months of use.

then all of sudden over last two weeks excessive scratching has occured worsening by the day.

i am a compulsive cleanre and wiped the face with a soft cloth several times a day, and worried there may be some protection worn away as odd how the same use but suddenly really bad scratches appear during normal wearing.

    thank for advise though.

    Hi

It is possible that you have only scratched through the fingerprint-resistant, oil repellent coating. It is normal for this coating to wear away under normal use, but it may have become scratched without damaging the Ion-X glass of the display beneath.

Whether you have scratched the glass or not, Apple does not recommend using cleaning products or polishing or buffing the watch with abrasives; these will wear away the coating and may also (further) scratch the glass beneath.

As you have already been advised, neither cosmetic nor accidental damage are covered under the One Year Limited Warranty. Apple has also already advised you of the cost for out-of-warranty service.

You may find that a good quality screen protector (thin film-type) proves effective in obscuring or reducing the visibility of the marks, as well as in providing some measure of protection against any future damage.
