Q: Photostream not showing on imac

Where is my photostream in photos on the mac , I have photostream turned on on my iphone and mac but pictures (if ever ) just haphazzardly appear on my mac, none of the pics I took yesterday are able to be viewed on my mac , they are just not there , (please dont go on about icloud photo library as I dont want to use it) its getting pretty bad when its quicker and easier to open safari (if it dont freeze) navigate to google photos and find the pictures there !

I want to use Apple so does anyone know why it wont work ... photostream is turned on on both devices.(At one time in the distant pass it worked)

In the perfect world I would just like to take a picture on my iphone and have it copied to my mac and be able to delete it off my iphone without it being removed from my mac ... is that just too much to ask !

Please if you answer just try and keep it helpful and not annoyed because im not finding apple perfect.

Thanks

Chris

hard to say since we can not see you

    a few observations

this sounds like you have more problems than myPhotoStream

open safari (if it dont freeze)

and you state that you have OS X 10.11.1 - the current version is OS X 10.11.5 - up date to 10.11.5 and that may resolve things

specifically as to MPS it does work and it is not instant and does need connectivity so that are many potential issues including no or bad internet

My Photo Stream should appear in the Albums section of Photos in the Sidebar,  if My Photo Stream has been enabled in Photos.

    Screen Shot 2016-06-19 at 15.12.05MESZ.png

I have photostream turned on on my iphone and mac

Where is My Photo Stream turned on?  It needs to be enabled both in the System Preferences > iCloud > Photos and in the Photos for Mac Preferences > iCloud.

Is it in Photos Preferences enabled?

The My Photo Stream album will not show, if it is empty, and if iCloud Photo Library has been enabled as well.

If My Photo Stream is enabled in Photos , but does not sync, disable it in System Preferences > iCloud, then restart the Mac, then enable it again in System Preferences > iCloud and Photos > Preferences > iCloud.

the reason is very simple - you are using ICPL and no photos can upload or download since you are out of iCloud space - you need to turn ICPL off or purchase more iCloud space

MPS does not show on systems using ICPL like you are doing

and since you sated that you do not and would not use ICPL no one could possibly have found this without your providing actual details

(please dont go on about icloud photo library as I dont want to use it)

You have iCloud Photo Library enabled. That is causing My Photo Stream to be hidden and will show the My Photo Stream photos integrated in the  "All Photos" album instead.

Disable iCloud Photo Library, since you do not want to use it.  Your iCloud Storage is full anyway.  You probably did not sign up for enough storage to hold your complete Photos Library.

To disable iCloud Photo Library follow the instructions on this Help page:  https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/phtf5e48489c

You will want to free the iCloud Storage as soon as possible, because your photos are currently blocking any upload.

    Stop using iCloud Photo Library

Important: If you decide to turn off iCloud Photo Library, first be sure to select “Download Originals to this Mac” in the iCloud pane of Photos preferences, so all your original photos can be downloaded from iCloud to your Mac. Be sure to allow time for your originals to download before turning off iCloud Photo Library completely.

    • Choose Photos > Preferences, then click iCloud.
    • Deselect the iCloud Photo Library checkbox to turn it off.

After you turn off iCloud Photo Library, the Photos app on your Mac can’t access your iCloud library, and any edits you make to photos on your Mac won’t appear on your other devices. Your library remains in iCloud and available to other devices that use iCloud Photo Library. To turn off iCloud Photo Library on all your devices, open the iCloud pane of System Preferences, click the Manage button, then click Photo Library. Click “Disable and delete.” Your photos and videos will be deleted from iCloud Photo Library in 30 days, unless you click Undo Delete before that time.

    Thanks for your answer

It worked its there , thank you,  but please less of the lectures , I would actually like to use iCloud but for me personally i just feel the charges for it are a bit rich, I thought I would use it until I reached my space limit but never realised turning it on would hide photostream I suppose its obvious really but then again why have the option of having them both turned on ! I also didn't realise that it counted against photostream storage , funny thing is I was still able to share photos to shared albums !

    Thanks

Sorry just went to photos ... photostream is there but my photos from yesterday and friday arent its been about half hour or so since i turned off icloud photo storage on both devices I might be a bit moany but shouldnt it be better than this!

My Photo Stream is not counting against you iCloud storage, and neither are Shared albums.  But iCloud Photo Library is limited to your free 5GB iCloud Storage, unless you subscribe to a monthly plan.

For My Photo Stream do other limits apply, because it is free, see this link:  iCloud: My Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing limits

photostream is there but my photos from yesterday and friday arent its been about half hour or so since i turned off icloud photo storage on both devices

It will need some time to slowly populate again.

You have now on all devices just "My Photo Stream" and "iCloud Photo Sharing" enabled?

Take one new photo with your iPhone and check, if it will appear in the My Photo Stream album.

ICPL storage does not count against MPS storage - there is no MPS storage as it is a streaming service and does not count against your iCLoud storage

again  as I said  if ICPL is on then MPS does not show on that system

MPS does not show on systems using ICPL

And as to lectures - you are the one spending your time lecturing rather than providing information - 75% or more of your first post was lecturing and editorializing - no one is lecturing you, just trying to help you and explaining to you how you can best get assistance - and long lectures by you as you posted are not helpful in any way

SO you go have a great day

    Bye

99 cents a month is a bit rich?

Please note the comment Leonie made and you did not acknowledge... no lecture intended, but IMO, you seem to be missing some of the key concepts of iCloud Photos, so it bears repeating.

The Photo Stream is at best, a temporary place to show off and share photos. It is free of charge, but only holds either 1000 photos or 30 days worth, whichever occurs first. At that point they will be removed from the Photo Stream.

Apple provides, for a reasonable price, extra storage that is metered and that is referred to as iCloud Photo Library. It is not timed and you can leave your photos and videos there as long as you wish.

So, the Photo Stream is not a backup option at all.

None of iCloud's photo services allow you to remove photos completely from your phone and leave them only on the cloud.
