Q: External speaker problem with my iMac

I just purchased Bose Companion 2 Series III external multi media speakers for my iMAC. I cannot get the speakers to work. I called BOSE support and they determined the problem rest with my computer. I have tried a NVRAM reset and a System Management Controller (SMC) reset . These work arounds have not solved my problem I am running El Capitan 10.11.5 OS Any qualified suggestions? I also tried setting up the speakers away from my computer on a different outlet still no positive results.

    Ensure you have a 3.5 mm jack to jack cable connected to the headphone out  from the iMacbook to the Bose input

    Also check these settings that Mute is not selected and the sliders can be moved to a mid point in the following windows:

    Connect another audio device such as a CD player TV set to the Bose, does this play sound?
