OSX boots to an Apple logo then a prohibitpry sign indicating missing system files:( i have a clone & a time machine but urgently need to finish a job, been trying to fix it but no luck so far.. it will no longer boot into safe mode, I've run all repair options , now at the point of starting to try restoring system files..however the clone is very slow
what a disaster:(

Jun 16, 2016 9:52 AM in response to boomishby Esquared,Sorry about that. Don't have a clue as to what could have caused this.
Why is that clone so slow, I wonder. Are you sure the internal disk is OK?

Jun 16, 2016 10:13 AM in response to Esquaredby boomish,NO problem not your fault , it should be fine to boot to Safe, weirdly I booted to safe again to try a repair from there and it corrupted the clone as well!! I wasn't even booted into the clone..
the he clone is a spare 2.5 sata drive (new) compared to the SSD it's slow , maybe booting for first time takes a while to sort stuff too. Now I'm booted into an older Mavericks clone (I keep lots of backups) and trying a Disk Warrior repair the main drive, if that fails then I'm going to try a time machine restore of the system folder after using terminal to unhide files (cnet Google topic).. If that fails I dunno maybe a reinstall of OSX without erasing..
I Should have left along till another day when I had time

Jun 16, 2016 11:16 AM in response to boomishby appreciate,For example if a user is reading an article & wants to find out the meaning of that word , the word is slightly tapped with three fingers and the meaning of that word is opened .
as in your case quick look is corrupted so dictionary might also be corrupted .
Please open dictionary & type any word in search field if it is black or some weird soon comes in dictionary app .
first confirm dictionary is corrupted then delete dictionary plist otherwise not .
In case if it is yes . click on go > hold option key don't release it > click on library > containers > find com.apple.dictionary.plist right click on it & move to trash .
Restart from apple logo & empty the trash .

Jun 20, 2016 2:04 AM in response to boomishby boomish,An update for those interested when finding this thread witht he same problem of no longer being able to boot after goign into safe mode! I eventually found that replacing the "Prelinkedkernal" from my time machine backup restored the boot procedure without having to restore from time machine or reinstall OSX.
The problem of "quick look" restarting when playing back a file however remains so safe mode didn't fix it. Boot does seem somewhat quicker..the search for a solution continues..

Jun 20, 2016 2:13 AM in response to boomishby Esquared,Make that 'prelinkedkernel'... But how on Earth did that one become corrupted?
-
Jun 20, 2016 7:02 AM in response to Esquaredby boomish, ahh yes, I was typing the foldername, not sure how it corrupts or even if it does, the files size looks ok, but it's consistent, my clone backup did exactly the same thing. I found a few threads on non safe mode boot that say replace the kernal file to fix a safe boot not working, I simply looked at what files had changed, thats how I found it.
I think I'll try and reinstall of OSX when I get the next bit of spare time..thank god for multiple backups..:)
