Q: iPhone 6 plus intermittent unresponsive screen

So a couple days ago, my iPhone 6+ began having intermittent screen responsiveness. First time, I received a phone call and couldn't answer it because the swipe wouldn't work. I turned it off and back on with no luck. I reset it and that fixed it. That was the only issue that day. I the last few days it's becoming more frequent. Today alone I've had to reset it eight times.

What it's doing;

  • touch screen is unresponsive to touch entirely.
  • touch screen responds after a delay
  • I tap an app icon and the app two rows up opens instead.
  • from loch screen-can't answer phone calls or notifications.

Sometimes it just leave it alone and come back to it and it's fine. Sometimes I leave it alone and come back with same result and I have to reset it. Sometimes I reset it once and trying to unlock with touchscreen (because touch ID doesn't work after reset) doesn't work so I reset it twice. It has worked after the second time, so far.

The phone is in perfect condition. Never been dropped. Was updated to 8.3 the day it was released so the issue didn't arise immediately after an update.

Anyone having these issues?

Try twisting the top part of the phone and the bottom part in oppositise directions. Basically twisting the Phone.

That temporarily solves my problem And makes the screen responsive again.

These phones are pieces of junk

So mine started doing this after 14 months of having it.  Took it to Apple when the screen became unusable.  They said it's from bending.  Paid $350 to get a new replacement phone.  2 months later my replacement phone started doing the same thing.  Took it in and got a free warranty replacement.  Both times the "Apple Genius" told me they had never seen something like this before.  Doubtful.

There is clear indication that something inside the phone is defective. A bad cable, a loose contact during manufacturing, a cold solder joint, something.

In my case the phone is an iPhone 6. When this problem occurs (and it is regular), the "fix" is to press very firmly at the speaker you place by your ear and push upwards.  Basically you are attempting to both press down and up as if you were sliding the screen into it's seat (screen comes off by unscrewing lower screws and sliding it down and up).

When I do this, the screen colors change from dark to light and the lines stop. Sometimes the screen is completely dark, not just the "Outer Limits - we are in control of your tv, don't touch the buttons" lines.

This is most definitely a defect in the iPhone 6. Unfortunately this defect was very seldom and random when I had a warranty and Apple said it was software, had me reload it a bunch of times. Now that it is out of warranty, the defect has progressed to appearing multiple times a day.

Manufacturing defects mean that you really have to include the iPhone warranty in the cost of the iPhone when comparing it to Android.

Dear Apple, for an uncommon issue why are there thousands of posts on the internet specifically referring to this issue? Go ahead and delete because I will NEVER buy an Apple product again anyways. Samsung here I come!

I suppose they don't care at all.

I was an iPhone user since first version. Now, it's my first Samsung S7 as my iPhone 6 Plus became unusable and no real support from Apple was received.

I am having the same issue everyone else is having, I fix phones so I took the two Penelope screws out then lifted the screen up and pressed on the cable shield for the LCD and my phone worked when there was pressure on that shield so I took the bottom 3 Phillips screws out on the LCD shield and my phone works!!!!!!!! I put it all back together and still is working!!!!! I hope this helps cause im not paying $350 to apple for a replacement when its their fault!

I also tried that Skipman94. I heard the connectors kind of snap into place, put the cover back on and snapped the screen back on. To my amazement the problem  was resolved only to reappear one week later. I decided that something had to be done soon or I would end up with a worthless brick, so I bit the bullet and traded in my phone for a new iPhone 6+ - end of problem, but the hit I took stings a bit.

To see what what an extreme case looks like, here is a video I recorded:

    http://youtu.be/-N0lZLLrT3U

Note how I push forward and down on the ear-speaker and I am pushing either lightly or in one case you can see firmly holding. The solder joint compresses, makes contact, screen display goes to normal.

Put in fridge 2 minutes makes it work.  It seams to be some thermal over heat sensor issue.

The level of misinformation is reaching ridiculous proportions here (now we are supposed to hold phones in the fridge?). It would not be so if Apple didn't delete every single helpful post about the real problem.

Again, as was posted 100 times before: google "touch ic failure" to find out what the real cause and solution is. And take the phone out of the fridge!!!

My 6 plus is about 17 months old. Started to develop the same issues, white bars at the top and unresponsive touchscreen. I would have to hard reset to get it working again. When the issue first started, it was intermittent, but over a few weeks it got progressively worse, to where the phone was hardly usable. My closest Apple Genius store is about 3 hours away and  I was out of warranty. So after readying that most customers were only given the option to but another phone for $350, I decided to try and repair the phone myself. I do computer repair and from reading all of the posts and checking out youtube videos I believe there are 2 separate items that can cause the same issues and symptoms, 1. The touch chip is damaged from bending or a drop. 2. The LCD/touchscreen/digitizer cable connectors become loose/unseated/ or also devolve a logic board issue where they connect to the logic board. I wasn't ready to pay the $350 for a new phone from Apple, so I decided to take the advise of Skipman94 and some youtube videos I had watched and open the IPhone and check out my lcd connectors(under the metal cover). I first opened the phone and then removed the metal cover and 5 tiny Philips screws, that protects/secures the lcd connector cables to the logic board. After that I put some good pressure on all 4(i think) cable connectors. Then with the phone apart, I then powered up the IPhone. I was pleasantly surprised to see a normal screen after powering up the iPhone. I left it alone for a few minutes and still all was good.I then made a phone call and did some texts. Still all good. I rebooted the phone, and still all good. So it seemed I was lucky in that my issue was with the LCD connectors to the logic board and not the touch chip issue others had.. I then decided to pad the underside of the metal cover(of the connectors) with 2 pieces of black electrical tape, to take up any void area in between the connectors and the cover and keep a good tight fit between the connectors, and the logic board.  After putting the cover back on and testing the iPhone again I was very happy that it was working normally again. I did some more testing and rebooting and still it worked normally. So I then put the LCD assembly back on and secured it. Again after powering it back up it worked normally. So I was lucky in that my issue was with the connectors. Will this last, who knows. Its been almost a week and still all is good. I dont think mine was bent, I believe it was do to a drop about 2 weeks before I started to experience this issue. This fix will cost you nothing if your good at this kind of repair. But its not for the faint of heart as you can easily crack your LCD if its not removed correctly and damage the inside parts if your not careful with the cables and such. I just wanted others here to know there may be an easy fix if your iPhone happens to have this issues. Good lucky with your repair.
