Q: not enough disk space error in FCP X. HELP!

I have over 600 GB free on my HD. However, I keep getting this error message when I try to import anything into FCP X. 'There is not enough disk space available at the selected destination. Please choose another one or clear some space.' Sometimes it imports it anyways when I click "OK", and sometimes it doesn't.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), null

What's the hard drive? How is it connected, and how is to formatted?

Not sure what the drive is. It is original to the iMac.

    Internal HD

    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

    Capacity: 999.35 GB

    Available: 833.16 GB

It has been working. FCP X had gotten slow so I backed everything up and moved the backups from the iMac.  I changed the settings through FCP X and all the videos and links are still connected fine. Just today when I tried to test it out, it started giving this error.

Is this your system drive?  You should be using an external (very fast) drive for media and Libraries.

    Select the Library in FCPX.

    Go to the File menu.

    Select "Delete Generated Library Files."

Then select ALL render files, and all proxy files.

Select Optimized files if you are NOT using optimized files.

    Quit FCPX.

Relaunch holding the Option and Command keys at the same time.

    Choose to delete preference files.

If you still get the error, run  Disk Utility (Utility folder inside the Applications folder).

Run "First Aid" on all drives.

If you still get the error, get a copy of Disk Warrior, and use it to repair the directories of all drives.

If Disk Warrior has any issues with a drive, it could be starting to go bad.

It is my system drive. We have been using it this way for over 4 years now. I have been here for 2 of those. I have been trying to get them to get an external drive, maybe this will convince them.

I followed through deleting the preference files and that seems to have fixed the issue. Although, when I did that before I came to the forum, it didn't. Ha, just needed to be convinced it had to work I guess.

    Thanks for the help.

Did you delete the generated files as well?

yes I did. I followed Bens steps: Thanks for the help. Now if I can get where I can update, we will be doing great, lol!

    Select the Library in FCPX.

    Go to the File menu.

    Select "Delete Generated Library Files."

Then select ALL render files, and all proxy files.

Select Optimized files if you are NOT using optimized files. (I do not optimize due to space                                                                                                       issues so I did delete these also)

    Quit FCPX.

Relaunch holding the Option and Command keys at the same time.

    Choose to delete preference files.

Deleting the generated files is probably what did it.

What's the update problem? What version are you on?

Updating should be as easy as launching the App Store application, going to the Update section, and clicking the update button for FCPX (and others).  Unless they restrict Internet access.  Yeah, in work environments it can be a royal PITA.  I've done years of consulting for broadcasters, film production companies, and corporations, they just don't get what makes for fast, efficient workflow, which equals saved money in the long run.  They just see the hassle and check written at the moment.
