Q: Downgrade from El Capital to Yosemite

I have an iMac 2008 with 4GB of Memory.   Having a  lot of slow performance issues.   Is it worth it to downgrade from El Capitan to Yosemite?

I use Photoshop and Lightroom CC2015

Thank you

Theoretically EL Capitan works fine if your machine has at least 2 GB of RAM.

Run this test and post its results here.

Lets see how much memory you are actually using.  With both Photoshop and Lightroom open, plus other apps you might commonly use and have open, check memory usage using the Activities Monitor app.  It's in the Applications/Utilities folder.  Pls post results.

    A couple of observations:

Your iMac will accept up to 6 GB RAM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

Rid the iMac of Sophos and DrCleaner.  They have been responsible for a number of crashes.

Check to see if all of your Adobe software is up to date.  Download Adobe products ONLY from the Adobe web site.

    Ciao.

OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Sure, one can install a lot more memory than the 4Gb maximum, see Apple attached link, but can subject iMac address more than 4Gb?   That's the real question I would have.

I have an early 2008 iMac, which is what the OP has. I installed 6 GB of memory and the computer recognizes the added 2 GB, so in this case, yes, it can address it.

Uninstall Trend Micro. It is worthless on a Mac. All it is good for is causing performance problems.
