This is purely a user-to-user forum space. Your iPhone is capable of overheating for many reasons, but there is a separate peace of hardware from the processor that determines when the temperature has become too extreme to operate and shuts down the iPhone.  If you have not been injured and there has not been any issue of damage to the iPhone, accessories, or surroundings due to the iPhone, I would examine these details.

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature.

When you find yourself in low cell service areas, you may also notice that your iPhone gets unusually warm to the touch. The battery will drain more rapidly as well. This is expected and documented in another public article that Apple offers, http://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/.

No Cell Coverage and Low Signal. This indicates that either you are in a poor cell coverage area and your iOS device is searching for a better signal or that you’ve used your device in low-signal conditions, which has affected your battery life.

    • You can optimize your battery life by turning on Airplane mode. Swipe up to open Control Center and tap the Airplane mode icon. Note that you cannot make or receive calls while in Airplane mode.

Essentially the phone is overworking itself to maintain that small amount of signal or if there is no signal, it is making every effort to find one. This puts a lot of stress on your cell phone, and as a result diminishes your battery rapidly, which also causes your phone to heat up.

Re-examining the http://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/ article, you can also find out what is using your battery the most through Settings>Battery. If something in this section seems way out of hand, you might have your answer as to the cause of your unusual heat.
