Q: Mail app will not open?

I have been using the Mail app for a while on the latest version of el capitan but it has suddenly refused to open anymore?

I have restarted the machine & the app just hangs when I open it, no windows even open?

does anyone have an idea what to do please?

Mail hangs when Safari is "running".

Does it open corectly in the No Safari situations?

The Mail "hang" diagnostic report was only there in the last etrecheck list.... not in the two list before that.

Download Firefox for example, install it.

restart and do not open any app, does Mail open? If yes, Quit Mail, open Firefox, then start Mail, does it open? If yes, use Firefox instead of Safari until we solved this; if not: run an etrecheck list at this point and post it.

There is no hang report after your last restart, mmmm, it is also clear that there is something wrong when Safari is started, maybe not related.

    x. Can you remove following files, you may trash them:

    -  dropbox from the SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath.

    -  remove iTunesHelper at the same time, it will start anyway when you need it.

    -  the  cleverfile..plist   and the   google.keystone..plist    and the two   Adobe.ARMDC...plists  from     Startdisk->Library->LaunchDaemons

    -  the  adobe.ARMDC...plist   and the  google.keystone..plist  from  Startdisk->Library->LaunchAgents

    y. switch TimeMachine off in SystemPreferences->TimeMachine.

    Restart, empty the Trash bin.

    Open Mail.

    Quit Mail.

System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Uncheck Mail for each account.

Go to User's Library (see below)

Scroll to Containers > com.apple.mail  drag to Trash

    Scroll to Mail, Rename MailXXX

Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar

    Empty the Trash

System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Check one of your accounts

    Open Mail

Does the account work correctly? If yes, after it completes the download from server, add other accounts one at a time.

If you stored data under the local folder "On My Mac", you can import these from Time Machine or from the folder that was XXX out.

    Show User's Library

The User's Library folder is hidden by default. To unhide: Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.

Yes, I did. Unfortunately my answer was not posted for some reason.

Make sure that Safari is having this problem because of the presence of adware.

    Just do a scan.

You will have t do this after starting up in Safe Mode to prevent

adware from interfering with the removal of adware .

    1. Shut down the computer.

Press the power button. Immediately after you hear the startup sound,

press and hold the Shift key.

The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup,

but not before the startup sound.

Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Startup will take longer than usual.

Screen flickering is normal in Safe Mode.

Login to your account. Launch Safari.

        Enter this address       https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

        in the Safari address bar.

Download,   Install , open,  and run it by clicking “Scan”  button   to remove adware.

        Once done, quit MalwareBytes.

    2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions

        Turn all extensions off.

    3. Safari > Preferences >  Search > Search Engine :

        Select your preferred   search engine.

    4. Safari > Preferences > General > Homepage:

         Set your Homepage.

    5. Restart normally from  menu in the menu bar.

The sentence "Make sure that Safari is having this problem because of the presence of adware"

    should be read as

"Make sure that adware is not installed on the system".

I am having terrible time with this forum software.

"Edit" button is not available for editing the sentence.
