Q: New iPhone SE - Won't Synch with iTunes

I backed up my old iPhone 5 to my computer using iTunes, on Windows 10 (64bit ...).

I got the new phone today -- iPhone SE, 64GB.

iTunes refuses to synchronize, it won't restore from the old phone's backup. After a couple of hours of it cycling through the process and crashing out and requiring me to log into the phone, etc., I gave up. I told the phone to go as a new phone.

I then tried to synchronize my apps and music. It won't do it. It keeps starting and I get a "Synchronization Failed" error, it fails starting or it fails to end. I used the diagnostics in iTunes, and it sees the phone just fine.

So I tried unplugging it and synchronizing via wi-fi. It started, and failed. Now it won't even let me try again, even after a computer restart and so on.

I'm at a loss how to restore all my apps and music on the new phone.

iPhone SE, Windows 10, 64-bit

Which iTunes version are you using? iPhone SE requires iTunes 12.3.3 or later.

Make sure iTunes and Windows are both up to date.

With your device set up as new can you sync any media from iTunes. Test with a song or two. See if they sync.

Also is there enough available storage on your new iPhone?

Have you tried backing up to iCloud and restore from there.

Lastly maybe back up your iTunes media and re-install iTunes. Only do this if your basic sync above with SE fails.

If basic sync works then just download as much music your storage will allow and re-download your apps. Free.

Import your pictures from the old phone to the computer also.

    Hope it helps

Windows is constantly up-to-date, as is iTunes.

I have tried synching, and I am told that it failed to start, or it failed to complete, one or the other. This is my problem!!

I have a 64GB phone, and only a small amount of it is being used, The music is on my computer in playlists already set up, much of it was ripped from my own CDs, and not downloaded from iTunes.

This was not a very helpful response, sorry to say. Not that you weren't trying, but for me, at least, there is nothing here that is useful.

    Anyone else?

    Following up.

I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it (latest version -- 12.4.1.6). All my playlists and such were there, which I expected.

When I try to sync my iPhone SE I get sync errors, I get partial synchronizations (I have my ringtones now, but not all my music or apps).

It sometimes loops -- it gives an error, or sometimes doesn't, and starts the whole process from backup to attempt to do a sync from the beginning. Sometimes when it gets to Step 8, it starts to sync music, you can see it listing the songs, it gets partway into something (right now it's at 8 of 16 on one my playlists) and stops. Right now it just disconnected and reconnected. And it just restarted the sync.

I am at a complete loss here.

What does the error message say? Try using a different USB port on your computer. If sync still fails, uninstall iTunes completely. Follow this article to uninstall iTunes, restart and reinstall Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later - Apple Support

The URL above would have been handy earlier. It is weird that they require such a specific sequence, but I did that. I then reinstalled. I am not sure that everything is working correctly yet, although the sync didn't fail this last time. However, the music on my phone has a bunch of empty playlists. I am going to try deleting those and doing another sync to get my music on the phone. This has not exactly been a seamless operation ... (I have upgraded multiple phones over the years and never had anything like this)

Lately my experience with iTunes upgrade has never been seamless. There's always something wrong during or after the upgrade. Upgrades used to be smooth and problem free some years ago. I didn't have to uninstall anything before installing the latest version. Now I don't upgrade iTunes unless I have to and I always manually uninstall all Apple related products in specific order. Restart PC and install new one. Hope your problem is fixed for real.

I think I am nearly there. I was able to install a bunch of stuff earlier, and after deleting play lists (although I was dismayed to see they got deleted in iTunes because I removed them from my phone *on the phone* -- I had backed them up ... so was okay), I was able to install music. Now I have some old apps that are giving me trouble ... it's really annoying, but I'm almost there.
