Q: Legacy Apple ID conundrum

So I have a legacy Apple ID that is just a text string WITHOUT @me.com or @ mac.com.  On my Idevices, some of my apps are connected to this legacy ID and the password is not working.  I cannot "manage my Apple ID" online and change it as the site will not accept an Appe ID without @me.com or @mac.com connected to it...  I am happy to lose this legacy id altogether but cannot...  If I delete the apps and then redownload them, I cannot download them under my current Apple ID.  It does not give me INSTALL or GET but the cloud with the arrow which connects it to the legacy Apple ID.  Can anyone help?  I have spoken to FOUR senior Apple advisors and they have kicked up to the SSE team but no one seems to be able to solve this.  Help me Obi_wan you're my only hope.

If you have signed the Legacy ID out of the iTunes & App Store, and signed in a new Apple ID, then you can download free apps and re-purchase any paid apps you had on the old ID. Is that what you are looking to do?

The old ID must be signed out on the device and on the computer where you have your iTunes Library.

Is the issue that you cannot sign out because you don't know the password? If so, then you can erase the device and then sign in with a new ID: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings.

You would also sign out on the computer.

    Cheers,

This basic answer has been tried...  I am not signed into the legacy Apple ID.  I am signed into my current one.  These apps were downloaded to the legacy one...

In these shots, you can see one is "tylerstringer" is tied the legacy/pre @me.com ID and the other is the “**********"  ....

I cannot get into managing the legacy one to change the password as the manage ID page will not accept it without the @me.com

    Thanks though

I'm confused about what the issue is then. The description you provided indicated that "It does not give me INSTALL or GET but the cloud with the arrow which connects it to the legacy Apple ID".

The iCloud indicator next to a purchased item will only show if you are signed into the iCloud ID that purchased that item. If the legacy ID is signed out of the iTunes and App Stores, where exactly are you seeing the download icon for the apps? What is the path?

One would think that yes but not true in my case.  I am singed into the “*********" account but when I try to update apps bought with the legacy "tylerstringer" account, they will not update without the password for the legacy account which I do not have nor can I change. When I delete the app and then try to redownload it singed into my current working “*********" apple Id, it will only download the app connected to the legacy version of the APPLE ID.  I know you wish this to be simple and you would be among the three Apple Genius Bar Techs, the four support line techs, the three senior Apple advisors who all thought that but could not figure it out either... It has been kicked up to the SSE level so perhaps in time, they may be able to sort it out.  Though my level and point s accrued do not show it, I am in IT and am not a noob...  This must have a solution but I'll be damned if anyone can figure out what it is.  Again thank you for your attempt.  P.S.  I also tried deleting the app files from ITunes and that too did nothing to change the problem.

It's a really bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - and I've asked the Hosts to remove it.

The "new" ID is not an iCloud ID is it? If it is, are you certain it is not the iCloud account that is associated with the legacy Apple ID?

Also, you are using the term "re-download". What do you mean by that? How are you "re-downloading" the apps?

@me.com and @icloud.com are the same thing.  Same account, same password.  Redownloading is deleting the app and then going to the app store and downloading it again.  Problem is those apps are already considered purchased by the legacy ID so they are designated with the cloud and download arrow so not a new download.

I know that @me.com and @iCloud.com can be the same thing. But that does not obviate the fact that @iCloud is also attached to a plethora of other types of Apple IDs including Gmail, Outlook, Exchange, Aol, and Yahoo. The question I was asking was in reference to the Legacy ID. I had not realized that the name for the Legacy ID was exactly the same as the @me.com ID.

So, what you are describing is that the apps, which you have deleted, appear to be connected to both the legacy and the current Apple ID. Have you tried using your current password to update them?

I tried logging in with Icloud and got the same results...  Some of my Apps, downloaded after the change are connect to the @me.com ID but some older apps are only connected to the legacy ID not to both.  I can update the ones tied to the current @me.com/icloud.com id but not the ones connected to the legacy one as I do not know the password.

Right, but my question was when you are asked for the Legacy account password, have you tried using your current password to see if it will accept that one? Since it sounds like the accounts are tied together in some way, it seems like the next logical thing to try is to see if the password on the current ID is also tied to the old one.

First thing I tried.  Not the same password or account.  Thanks again though.  I'm telling you.  This is a tough one.

Did you ever get this problem solved? I have the same problem with a legacy apple ID.

I just got an iPhone 7 and the current apple ID works fine (one with @mymail.com Apple ID). The legacy ID is still in the system somewhere as it gives and error message:

"Sign in to the iTunes Store

Enter the password for your Apple ID

    "legacy ID"

    [Password   ]"

    Cancel       OK

Of course there is no legacy ID any longer, at least there is no password associated. I can't get rid of the error message. I can't sign out of iTunes with the legacy ID because I am not signed in under the legacy ID.

In addition, when an app needs to be updated, and it was purchased under the legacy ID, I have to delete the app, and then redownload the app from the app store. That works fine. I'm assuming it is under the new apple ID. That was happening with the iPhone 6, and continues to happen with the iPhone 7. Obviously it is not a hardware problem, but a legacy apple ID problem.

    Thank you Apple. Help please.
