Q: iCloud photos storage space discrepancy

My iCloud storage space should be using more than it is. The photos on my computer take up around 67Gb but iCloud says I'm only using 15Gb for ALL my files including backups and docs, etc.

In the settings for iCloud > Photos, I have checked iCloud Photo Library. This means ALL my photos should be saved to my iCloud space.

What am I missing here?

Has the upload to iCloud for your Photos Library already finished? Have a look at the Photos > Preferences > iCloud.  Is there still a progress bar and does it say "Updated just now"?

And check, if all items in your Photos Library are eligible to upload to iCloud. Your Photos Library might contain items that cannot upload to iCloud.

Check this with a smart album:

         File > New Smart album

Add a rule:  Photo is unable to upload to iCloud Photo Library.

    Is this album empty?

Your iCloud Photo Library should be slightly smaller than the local library on your Mac.  The iCloud Photo Library does not store faces thumbnails or previews.

For example. My local Photos Library has a size of 190.69 GB. But in iCloud are only 150.5 GB of photos.

The initial upload to iCloud has been complete for a long time now, months. I've created the smart album and it is empty.  What to check next?

Do you have referenced photos in your library?

Photos that are referenced outside your Photos library cannot upload to iCloud Photo Library.

Check with a smart album with the rule "Photo is referenced".

Referenced album is also empty. All my photos are in a single location, the photos folder.

You may want to check the size of the Masters folder in your Photos Library. essentially the contents of Masters will upload to iCloud Photo Library.

    • Select your Photos Library in the Finder and ctrl-click it.
    • Select Show Package Contents from the pop up menu.
    • In the window that will open select the Masters folder and check its size. Is it roughly the same size as your iCloud photos?
