Q: 'My Photo Stream' album vanished from 10.11.5

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to 10.11.5. After doing so, the My Photo Stream album in Apple Photos has disappeared. It used to be listed as one of the albums in the sidebar; now it's gone.

 

The My Photo Stream album still exists on my iPhone.  Today I took a couple of pictures on the iPhone, and they were synced to the MacBook (they appeared in the Photos gallery in Apple Photos). This indicates that photo stream is working its magic between the iPhone, the iCloud, and the MacBook.

 

Of course, I have My Photo Stream enabled in Photos.  I do not have iCloud Library enabled.

 

What's happened to the My Photo Stream on the MacBook? And how do I get it back?

That fixed it! (sort of).  After disabling My Photo Stream (in Photos/Preferences) and then re-enabling it, the My Photo Stream folder re-appeared in Photos. After a few seconds, 14 photos appeared in it. This despite the fact that the My Photo Stream folder on my iPhone contains 967 photos.

    On the iPad the "Save image" button is here in the Share menu:

    And the "Duplicate" button has a "+" to indicate that it will create a new photo in the Camera Roll.

    You're correct!

    The Share > Save method on my iPhone saved a copy of a photo in the Photo Stream album into the Camera Roll. Once in the Camera Roll, I can connect iPhone to MBP using USB cable, and import the contents of the Camera Roll album into the Mac.   Thanks for educating me about the 'Save' command.

     

    Of course, it's a real pain to have to manually Share>Save the hundred of photos that are in the My Photo Stream album on my iPhone, and then import them into the MBP - especially frustrating, since they were already there before Apple made the My Photo Stream album on the Mac disappear. But that's life, when dealing with Apple photo software. I've been thinking about enabling iCloud Photo Library, but I have diminishing confidence that Apple can reliably store/save/retain my images in their magical, mystical cloud.

    After selecting a photo in iPhone's  My Photo Stream album, the Duplicate+ button does this:

        Unable to Duplicate

        An error occured while duplicating this photo.

        Please try again later.

     

    However, the Save Image button does cause a copy to be created in Camera Roll:-)

     

    Odd error message. "Please try again later" sounds like it's a server-side issue.  I did try again (and again, and again), with no success.

     

    I've found that if I select a photo in the Camera Roll and tap Duplicate+, a copy appears in the Camera Roll, with no error message. I conclude that the Duplicate+ command is not intended to be used in the My Photo Stream album, even though it appears in the Share menu.

     

    Thanks for the tip about the Save Image button to migrate photos from My Photo Album to Camera Roll.

    As I said, I could only test on the iPad, not on my iPhone, because the iPhone is using iCloud Photo Library. On the iPad both Duplicate+ and Save worked to save a copy to the camera roll.  Perhaps there is a difference between iPad and iPhone.

    The User Guide for iPhone and iPad does not explain these share options, so we have to experiment.
