Q: retaining keywords between projects

Is it possible to retain keywords between projects?

I ask because we work with the same footage over and over (stock footage library). So, I import new clips, assign them keywords in FCX, edit a project then move on to the next project. But now that "old" footage is associated with a library--and if I drag clips from the finder into an Event in FCX, the keywords associated with those clips are gone.

In my old file organization scheme (nested folders and with previous versions of FC), if I drag folders into an event, those folder names become keywords assigned to clips.

So how do I retain my keywords between projects if footage was imported in FCX?

Should I move new media out of Libraries and into my existing old folder scheme before adding keywords? And continue to build my stock footage library that way?

Thanks. I've looked in the manual and online for this issue and can't seem to find anything. Maybe I'm not asking the right question....

First, don't use managed media, use external media.

Second, drag the event from one library to the other. If the libraries are on the same drive, pointing to the same folder, the media doesn't duplicate, but the metadata does.

So by not using managed media--you're saying don't store the footage in FCP libraries? Keep my folder system?

So, outside of FCX these keywords don't exist?

We will be moving into a server situation--so our footage categorization will be even more critical. From my perspective it seems like to "see" the footage categories (i.e. "keywords") one would have to open a project. That's a little cumbersome for multiple editors connected to a server. If that's true, we should have one library with our entire stock footage library in it. (??) If this is correct it almost seems like a folder organization scheme makes more sense.

But if I'm wrong and there's a better way please help!

KEywords are only in FCP. You can share them through events and libraries t or using XML files.

IF you have a folder called Stlock Footage on your server and a library that points to that folder, you can have whatever folder structure you like in Stmock Footage and that folder structure will be reproduced as keywords in FCP when the folders are imported. When new elements are added to the folders and get imported into the stock library they just have to be dragged into the appropriate keyword collection to match the categorization structure you have on the server.

    Yes, thanks!

That's what I was thinking when I read the manual but wanted to be sure before I started doing this one way...didn't want to have to go back and change everything.

I am trying to find a solution to 2 identical libraries, but one I took on the road with me (2nd library) and keyworded sections of footage in that library while traveling. If I want to move those keyworded file locations on the media back to my working library (1st library). You are saying that if I "Second, drag the event from one library to the other. If the libraries are on the same drive, pointing to the same folder, the media doesn't duplicate, but the metadata does." it will then not duplicate the media files but put the keywords on the same media in the same event at the same points as they are in the 2nd library ?

    Thank you for your help.
