My iMac has version 10.6.4 how can I update to "el capitan" ?

Back up your data, use the Software Update pane of System Preferences to update to 10.6.8, check your applications for compatibility, and try downloading El Capitan from the Mac App Store.

Also check to make sure that your machine meets the system requirements:

Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

Note that 4 GB of RAM is generally considered to be a minimum for El Capitan (more would be much better as the new OS versions do like a lot of RAM).
