Q: "Safari can't find server" message

In just the past few days, I have been getting a "Safari can't find server" message regularly despite the fact that I'm connected to the internet and the server is a real server, such as Google or other sites that I use all the time.

Is there something funky going on with Safari that this would suddenly start happening?

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Mini (2.6 Inte core i5/iphone 6s

    1. Deselect Proxies if selected.

System Preference > Network > Advanced  > Proxies Tab

Unlock the lock if you have to.

Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if checkmarked.

        Click "OK" then  "Apply”.

    2. If this doesn’t help, please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

         http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open and select”Open”  in the dialog to run it.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste it when you reply.

So I was looking for mackeeper. It's not in the applications folder. There is nothing with the name mackeeper when I search my computer. Not sure where it is, but obviously I deleted it sometime in the past and there's a remnant there somewhere.

Just found a couple of files in the launch daemon folder in my library. I trashed them.

After doing that cleanup, I will restart my computer and then go back to using Safari as I regularly do. I'll come back and consider this issue solved if I don't get that message any more.

    thanks for your suggestions.

This did not solve the problem. Immediately upon restart, I opened a Safari tab to check something on Wikipedia and got the "can't find server" message.

If you have not tried this already, please try it.

    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all lights are lit properly. It will take a while.

        Restart the computer and test.

    2. Try Google DNS (Domain Name Servers)

Launch System Preferences from the Dock.

          System Preferences > Network

          Screen Shot 2016-06-23 at 1.53.01 AM.png

Click the lock to unlock and authenticate.

Click “Advanced” button at the bottom right corner of the window.

           Screen Shot 2016-06-23 at 1.53.19 AM.png

          Click the DNS tab.

Click the”+” button at the bottom left corner.

You will have an ISP provided DNS Server listed

Add these two server numbers under it, one under another.

           8.8.8.8

           8.8.4.4

Click the “+”  button and add the first entry listed above.

Click the “+” button again and enter the second number

           Click OK and then Apply.

           Test Safari.

If you ever want to remove these DNS names, just highlight it and press the “-“ button.
