Q: iPad Pro 5Ghz WiFi connection drops but iPad3 didn't?

Have an iPad3 and it worked fine in bedroom connected to BOTH the 2.4 and 5Ghz SSID. 5Ghz had a stronger signal but the speed on both bands was around 40% of my Internet speed, but still fast enough to do anything (~40Mbps). Bought a new iPad Pro 128GB 9.7 and restored the old iPad3 to it. Works fine, but in the bedroom the 5Ghz band doesn't stay on? Brought the iPad3 right next to it and had no problems on the same band?

I know the iPad3 is N speed only and the iPad Pro is n/ac. I do have an AC router. Is the problem the Pro is connecting to the AC signal? Is there a way to restrict it to N?

My ISP speed is 100Mbps down and the Pro gets that on both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands, so the better antenna's are an improvement.

Take a look at this Apple Support article:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204051

    Reset your network settings.

Settings - General - Reset - Reset Network Settings

Reset your device. This won't delete your data stored on the phone.

    • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
    • Press and hold on the Home button
    • Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.

Alternatively, you may go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings

    Thanks for the quick reply.

We actually bought 2 Pro's yesterday, one for me and one for my wife (hers replaced an iPad2). Both were restored from the old iPad images via iTunes. I am now running a test on both using Showtime Anytime on both Pro's on the 5Ghz band. So far, it isn't dropping?

I will give your suggestions a try though later.

I did find a 'similar' post, iPad Pro 9.7 WiFi connection issues - 5GHz and it 'claimed' the problem was due to a setting on the router, It was the "Enable 20/40 MHz Coexistence" which I have enabled. In that referenced post it claimed turning that off fixed the problem? I may try that too.

Right now though there appears to be no drops on either Pro?

Is there a way to restrict the Pro to using N speed only? Don't really need AC?

Shouldn't have to do that since the iPad3 worked fine there? Not a signal issue unless it is the AC signal.
