Q: Cannot see new external HD connected to my iMac from my MacBook???

Hi all,

I have connected a new 8TB Seagate external HD to my iMac and I am attempting to see it from my MacBook Air and my partner's MacBook.

It is formatted correctly (MacOS Journaled and GUID) and have not had problems with the 3TB drive we had connected before.

File sharing on and all seems normal.

For the life of me, I can't see the drive/partitions from the MacBook's, despite being able to see the old drive.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

iMac with Retina 5K display, iOS 9.3.2, null

    Hey Dr.Tobyk,

Not being able to see a new drive over your network when you can still see the old drive would drive me nuts. I use sharing like this daily and know how handy it can be.

What I always look at when setting up a new drive to be shared is How to connect with File Sharing on your Mac this article always helps me solve any issues that come up.

Things I always look of when setting up a new drive is that it is in the list of shared folders and verify the Users box has the correct users with the correct access.

    Cheers

Thanks for that article, will take a closer look, certainly is infuriating.

I think the trouble relates to the AFP and SMB options in file sharing - I can now see the drives, but if I want to make these available to Time Machine, do I want AFP and/or SMB selected in file sharing???

So confusing for something that has always been relatively simple.

    Thanks again

Have you actually marked the drive as shared?

By default (and what most people expect/want), plugging in an external drive does not automatically make it available over the network. You need to open System Preferences -> Sharing and add the drive to the list of shared resources.

Yes, absolutely. Appear to have resolved the issue by changing the SMB and AFP settings, despite this not working the first time.

    Most frustrating.

    Thanks
