Q: Caching Server does not cache its own Installs from App Store

I set up the OS X Server App 5.1.5 (15S7047) on an iMac running El Capitan 10.11.5 (Build 15F34). The iMac has 8 GB of Ram and an i5 processor. It is Mid 2011.

It is part of a Windows Domain and has a Time Capsule set to Bridge Mode.

On the iMac here are the settings, etc.:

Server Overview:

Internet: Reachable at 202.etc., no services available

Public Host Name: None

Network Interface: Ethernet, Ip Address 192.168.0.70 (DHCP assigned - not static, but it never changes)

Accounts: All Users, All Groups (populated by the Windows Domain Controller - Active Directory for the Windows Domain.)

Only the Caching Service is ON.

The Caching service Status says "Available - Devices on your local network will automatically use this service.

Permissions: Only local subnets

Serve clients with public addresses: matching this server's network.

iCloud Data: unchecked to cache personal iCloud data

Cache available: 150GB

Cache used: None

When installing from the App Store, the cache is unchanged - always None.

I have also downloaded from a MacBook Pro and nothing is cached as well.

I am new to Macs and must have missed some setting, but have read lots on various Forums. I suspect the Reachability saying "no services available" may be part of the problem.

I have checked the logs - the service log for Caching may help. The first install of the Server App was about a week ago, and it shows a problem with "Request for blacklist..." (see below)

Around 12:15pm today, I uninstalled the Server App by moving it to Trash, deleted the Library\Server, etc. then installed the Server App again. Now the failing activity is not being logged.

BUT STILL NO CACHING OF ITS OWN INSTALLS FROM THE APP STORE.

I have also tried it with OS X Firewall off, Avira Real-Time Protection off, but to no avail.

I suspect the No services available status for the Internet setting, mentioned at the very beginning of this post, to be significant but have not found out what is missing.

Thank you very much for any help.

I haven't figured out why my password won't let me into Server in Safe Mode - maybe because the Server Users are part of a Windows Active Directory for the Domain. My normal iMac login is in there as Admin, so I don't know why that won't work, nor work when I changed the Server password. I will look further into this part later.

Anyway, I can log in to the computer in Safe Mode and access the /Library/Server/Caching/Logs and found this in the debug.log after going into the App Store and getting/installing an app:

    2016-06-23 12:22:40.850 Caching Server version 149.4 started

So in Safe Mode the bolded request worked this time. Will now log in normally and see if the download was cached, and also post the cache log in the Server app.

Logging back in normally, entering the Server to Manage Services, Logs, Caching - the Caching Service Log showed no history, but the debug log quoted in my last post does show history - plus current activity.   When logged in normally the /Library/Server/Caching/Logs/debug.log shows this new addition:   2016-06-23 12:53:29.249 Caching Server version 149.4 started 2016-06-23 12:53:29.878 AllowPersonalCaching setting = 0 2016-06-23 12:53:29.878 Server GUID is 279... 2016-06-23 12:53:30.627 Cache manager initialized, cache contains 2.5 MB of 150.00 GB (including 0 bytes of 150.00 GB personal [icloud]) 2016-06-23 12:53:30.628 HTTPServer: Started HTTP server on all interfaces, port 49814 2016-06-23 12:53:30.628 Retrieving configuration 2016-06-23 12:53:31.062 Request for configuration from http://suconfig.apple.com/resource/registration/v1/config.plist failed: The Internet connection appears to be offline. 2016-06-23 12:53:31.062 Reverting to last accepted configuration 2016-06-23 12:53:31.615 Cleaning cache 2016-06-23 12:53:31.617 Request for blacklist from http://suconfig.apple.com/resource/registration/v1/blacklist.plist failed: The Internet connection appears to be offline. 2016-06-23 12:53:31.618 1 consecutive cleanup failure(s).  Will retry in 87 seconds. 2016-06-23 12:55:00.957 Cleanup succeeded. 2016-06-23 12:55:00.957 Registering for notifications 2016-06-23 12:55:01.001 Registering for service 2016-06-23 12:55:03.782 Registering with local address: 192.168.0.70 (1000 Mbit/sec wired); local subnet range only: 192.168.0.0-192.168.1.255; on AC power: yes; cache size: ~150 GB; capabilities: im,ns,qp,sc; portable: no 2016-06-23 12:55:04.335 Request for registration from https://lcdn-registration.apple.com/lcdn/register succeeded 2016-06-23 12:55:04.335 Got back public IP 202.62.123.237 2016-06-23 12:55:04.369 Registration succeeded.  Resuming server. 2016-06-23 12:55:04.370 This server has 0 peers   So the two requests fail again - even before I tried downloading anything from the App store (which I didn't bother doing this time).   Also, the cache did NOT increase in size with my Safe Mode download.  I will look to do what you posted about Terminal a bit later.   Thanks again for your expertise!

Given this part pasted below worked in Safe Mode but not in Normal Mode, is there anything I should disable that could be causing this?

I uninstalled Avira a few days ago, but that didn't seem to help. I also turned off the iMac's Firewall at one point, to no avail as well.

However, even in Safe Mode, the download from the App Store was not cached.

    Safe Mode:

2016-06-23 12:22:44.023 Request for configuration from http://suconfig.apple.com/resource/registration/v1/config.plist succeeded

    Normal Mode:

2016-06-23 12:53:31.062 Request for configuration from http://suconfig.apple.com/resource/registration/v1/config.plist failed: The Internet connection appears to be offline.

Or is this the time to get into the Unix Shell Script you posted? Would I activate it during the boot up which is when the Server Caching is presumably loaded - or during a Get/Install from the App Store (which is not caching in either Safe or Normal Mode) or ???

    Many thanks.

Please remove the Wacom software, and also "DrCleaner" (which is much worse than useless.)

Any third-party software that doesn't install from the App Store or by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

    Thank you for the advice.

Dr. Cleaner and App Cleaner were only installed as tests for the Caching Server - to see if they actually would be cached. I used them mainly because they both come from the App Store, are small in size, and are free - and were giving very good ratings. The problem with the Caching Server definitely existed prior to even installing those two apps from the App Store..

I have not installed any third party software on this computer since installing El Capitan - except for last night when I installed Git from sourceforge.net, thinking at first this was necessary, until I realized there was a Guest way to post the test results.

Do you think it may be the Wacom software that is causing the problems with the Caching Server? It seems very unlikely to me, but I am unfamiliar with how Macs work. I can try and remove that as I don't use the Wacom tablet - it was for another user of this computer in the past.

So there is no good app for removing software, it sounds like. Thank you for this info and what I might be able to do to rectify this.

I can also revert back to Lion, remove various apps that I inherited with this machine, and re-install El Capitan and Server, if that is best. I prefer not doing that, but can if needs be.

Was there anything else about the report that sounds suspicious in terms of disallowing the Caching Server from working properly?

Wacom had an uninstaller so I ran that and Wacom is now gone. After rebooting, I downloaded an app from the Store but it still did not cache. The Caching Log says the same things as previously reported:

Request for configuration from http://suconfig.apple.com/resource/registration/v1/config.plist failed: The Internet connection appears to be offline.

Same for the request for blacklist.

    A

    Please back up all data.

Quit the Server application and drag it to the Trash, but don't empty. You'll be prompted to confirm that you want to stop all services. You won't lose any data.

If you're using the server for DNS, temporarily change the primary DNS setting in the Network preference pane to another DNS.

Put the app back where it was and launch it. Test. If there's no change, go to Step B.

Revert the DNS setting, if applicable.

    B

If you don't already have a current backup, please back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

Before doing step one, I checked the Caching Log and found this:

After rebooting later, I got the usual fails:

Jun 24 14:55:17 dlserver AssetCache[330]: Caching Server version 149.4 started

Jun 24 14:55:18 dlserver AssetCache[330]: Request for configuration from http://suconfig.apple.com/resource/registration/v1/config.plist failed: The Internet connection appears to be offline.

Jun 24 14:56:25 dlserver AssetCache[330]: Registration succeeded.  Resuming server.

It is odd that Caching worked above for the RAW Camera Update and says it was via a Get request by "Software Update". I don't have the Advanced section of the Server app for Software Updates turned ON so this must be a different Software Update service that also gets cached?

Rebooting after doing Step 1 and moving the Server from the Trash to Applications, Caching still did not work from the App Store.

Here is the current Caching Log after doing Step 1 altogether.  (Again, I am in Fiji, one day ahead of the US and 5 hours behind the West coast.)

Interesting that the Request for blacklist does not appear here.

Regarding Step 2, it seems I should be able to just reinstall the OS via the Recover mode, right?

I started the reinstall process, but it sounds like the process is going to download the OS via the Internet. I cannot do that here as it is 6.2GB and our bandwidth is very limited. I installed El Capitan via a boot drive and was assuming this process would just use a recovery area on my local hard drive to reinstall from - NOT the internet.

Is the request to "Sign in to download from the App Store" simply to verify the machine or will it start downloading El Capitan again? I will keep it paused here until I find out. It sounds like it should recover from my hard drive but the language of the request is misleading. Please let me know. Thank you.

I decided to continue but it allowed me to cancel when it got to the part about downloading additional components that would take 197 hours. lol

So this is not an option. However, I can restore back via the Time Capsule to just after installing El Capitan to 10.11.3 via a USB drive and the additional upgrade to 10.11.5 - if you think that would help.

This backup would just be a few weeks ago so I am not sure what could have gotten screwed up within that short period of time. Also, I have already installed the Server App twice via download and also as you instructed yesterday - to no avail. Plus Safe Mode had the same issues.

It is odd that I have gotten some iOS devices' downloads cached but not the server's own downloads. I wonder if the Apple Store works from here but not the App Store in terms of caching? I will try that.
