Q: photo is awful, I want iphoto back

WHY did apple replace iphoto for photo? No drag and drop, no assigned titles (so I have to search through thousands of photos to find one (since no drag and drop). And I can not see any way to put photos in albums or folders. So frustrating.

Re: Is Iphoto gone ? i want it back!

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Glad to see you're happy again.

Occasionally you may need to use Photos nevertheless, for iPhoto  is no longer supported well. You cannot order books or any pprint products from iPhoto any longer for example.

WHY did apple replace iphoto for photo? No drag and drop, no assigned titles (so I have to search through thousands of photos to find one (since no drag and drop). And I can not see any way to put photos in albums or folders. So frustrating.

If you need to fall back on Photos, it is not as bad as you think.

It is easy to drag photos to albums and folders, if you reveal the sidebar (enter the key combination option-command-S).  Then simply drag any photo to the album in the sidebar.  You can create additional folders with "File > New Folder" and drag folders into folders r albums into folders.

And you can drag and drop photos directly from Photos to applications that have been updated to work with Photos - Pages, Keynote,Mail, the newest versions of Microsoft Office.

    Hi,

I think you will like PowerPhotos:

    https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/

PowerPhotos works with the built-in Photos app on your Mac, providing an array of tools to help you get your photo collection in order.

You can sort the photos and show Subtitle.

Like léonie has already suggested you need to consider moving on to Photos.  iPhoto was dropped by Apple over a year ago and is becoming incompatible with the system more and more each system upgrade.  iPhoto is unable to order any products from Apple's Print Products Store. Also there are some slideshow themes that don't work as intended.

Bottom line:  iPhoto is on it's death bed and users should be migrating to Photos before it suddenly becomes totally incompatible with an update.

The transition I require is for my meticulously crafted smart albums to continue to work, many of which are based on star rating ranges (no longer a thing because they decided to break it... because they felt like it). Honestly, it seems like the first order of business for new "upgrades" by Apple is to remove useful functionality. I'm happy to move to Photos once it seamlessly integrates my iPhoto library, 100%. I have 42,697 images.

When you migrate the library, the star ratings will be replaces by keywords.

I renamed the automatically created keyword to 5*****, 4****, etc and assigned them to keyboard shortcuts 5, ,4, 3 ......

This work-around makes it possible to search for "rating is as least" and to apply the ratings with one keyclick, as described in this User Tip:   How to Simulate Star Ratings in Photos

All my rating-based smart albums are working again.
