Q: MCA Error report

Hi,

I had issues a couple of days ago where my macbook pro would freeze and I had to manually force it to shut down. I thought the issue was fixed but as of last night it was shutting itself down without warning. When I restart the macbook pro I get an error message stating:

I don't know what the writing in red means - are they something to worry about?

    Thanks

You were given the right advice in the other thread that you started on this subject. This is a warranty issue. The "etrecheck" stuff is completely irrelevant.

    Hello Cake1,

The items in red are something to worry about. The "mds" entry is probably a side effect of whatever problem you are experiencing. The "Anywhere" entry is not related to your problem, but is definitely something you need to fix. That is Gatekeeper, your first line of defense against malware. And you have it turned off. Go to System Preferences > Privacy & Security > General and check the radio button that says "Mac App Store and identified developers".

Otherwise, your EtreCheck report says that you have a very recent machine, with very little 3rd party software that could be causing problems like this. You should take your machine to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Centre.

On a side note, why did you change that security setting in the first place? I am seeing more and more people have this setting turned off. There is absolutely no reason to ever do that. It bothers me that so many people are turning off basic security just at the time when Mac malware is starting to become a serious problem. I don't know why I am suddenly seeing so many EtreCheck reports with Gatekeeper turned off. It is a mystery. Someone out on the internet or elsewhere is giving out very bad advice.

    Hi Etresoft

Thanks for your reply, in response to your question, I have not touched any of the security settings so the 'Anywhere' entry you were talking about in the settings was set that way when I got this laptop.

    Thanks for your help.

You are not showing any known "Bad Actors" in that etrecheck report.

Therefore you must take "Kernel panic, Machine check" at face value. You have a serious Hardware flaw in your system, such as a Bad CPU chip. You need service right away.

    Hello again Cake1,

That is not the default setting. That is a malicious change. If it wasn't you, then someone else did it for you.

You can set it back to the safest setting by using:

    System preferences > Security&Privacy > General

    Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 10.15.04 AM.png

change the radio button choice at the bottom to "Mac App Store and identified developers"
