Q: Organizing photos problems

I  have photos from various versions of iPhoto,Picasa, and Kodak EasyShare scattered over my main drive and 4 external drives. When I went to gather everything into one place I just got trouble. It seems my Mac (OS Mavericks) cannot handle large gobs of pictures. It can transfer small batches but I have tried Lightroom,Picasa,ACDSee, and a couple of others and they all start and then choke. Finally I used the Finder to search for all jpgs  and then I could only drag small batches. it would take a lot of time to move everything that way.

I was thinking something like rsync could scour  all my hard drives and do it bu

t I believe that will only transfer one whole folder not many files in many different places? I’m not good at terminal commands.

Any help out there?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

For sure the issue is not the OS - Maverick can handle large numbers of photos just fine - since you provide no information my guess is lack of free disk space

Is OS X 10.9.5 as you state correct for your OS? What version of iPhoto? it should be 9.5.1

How much free disk space do you have on your hard drive?

When I went to gather everything into one place I just got trouble.

What are you trying to do? Do you want to create a set of folders with all photos in one place? Or do you want to import into one application?

How have you been using the applications to move the photos. What do you mean by "they all choke"? Do you get an error message or do the hang or do nothing? What kind of error message, if any?

if you try to copy large amounts of files around, be sure to have at least 10GB of storage free on your system drive. At all times.

DDon't try to copy large amounts of files by copy and paste - use drag and drop.  And to ove photos from applications to a folder use "file > export"

You have probably done that already, but before you start reorganizing your photo libraries make a current backup of all drives with photos, before you start. It is easy to accidentally overwrite photos this way or delete the wrong photos.

Also download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Thanks for your reply. I ahve 1.4 terabytes of space way more than  enough. Yes 10.9.5 is the OS. My iPhoto is up to date but it is irrelevant as I am just trying to gather all my jpg's etc. iPhoto doesn't do gathering like Picasa as I understand it.,

I am trying to scour all my drives for jpg's and gifs etc and move or copy them into one folder on my drive with 1.4 Tb of free space. I have used various programs that say they do this, and they do but only for smaller batches. With the larger batches they either "hang" or start and move a few photos, then hang. No error message. ( I picked up the word "choke" from Donald Trump describing what  happens to his competition when they can't handle things When I used the Finder to find all the jpg's it also "choked" unless I did the drags in smaller batches.

Have you installed all system updates, i.e. the security updates?

Compare your System Preferences > App Store:

    screen-shot-2014-12-17-at-10-31-31-am-tm.jpg

The flag "Install system data files and security updates" should be on. If this flag is not enabled, enable it and check again for updates at the AppStore.

With the larger batches they either "hang" or start and move a few photos, then hang. No error message.

There is probably an item in your iPhoto Library that cannot be copied because it is corrupted or you are trying to copy it to a volume with an incompatible file system or to a drive, where installed software is interfering.when you manage to move a few items, check which item should be copied next. The is probably the culprit preventing the copy.

Is your iPhoto library on a locally mounted  drive, that has the file system MacOS Extended (Journaled) or has the drive a different file system? One of your drives is listed with the file system ExFat (disk3s6) /Volumes/ExFat : 268.11 GB (268.09 GB free)

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions. After I used Etrecheck and saw all the red ink, I guessed my problem was my Mac. I have an old 10.6.8 laptop, so I hooked it up and plugged in one of the drives I wanted jpg's off of, and wonder of wonder it worked using Picasa. Picaa hung once digesting 70gb of photos but I restarted Picasa and it took up where it left off and finished !   So I am going to use the laptop to finish the jobs and then worry about what is wrong with my desktop Mac. Thanks again for your kindness in helping me.
