Q: OSX Apple Mail. IMAP in Sent not displaying in other mail clients IMAP Sent folders

Hi,

OSX 10.11.5 /Mail

When I send a mail on an email client like Thunderbird (Windows) or K9-Mail ( Android ), the Sent message is stored in the IMAP Sent folder. As expected this message is seen by all mail clients in the Sent folder, iincluding OSX Mail

Issue:

When I send a mail with Apple OSX Mail client the message is copied into the IMAP Sent folder.

However only Apple Mail can see this. The file cannot be seen on the other mail clients!

Even though Apple Mail client is set to save on the IMAP folder, does it really?

King regards,Sophie.

P.S Posted in El Capitain thread because I did not find a Mail client section.

MACBOOK AIR (11-INCH, EARLY 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), Automator cvs

    From the Mail menu bar, please select

              Mail â–¹ Preferences... â–¹ Accounts â–¹ Mailbox Behaviors

    and check the box marked

              Store sent messages on the server

    Also select

              Delete sent messages when: Never

    That setting you described has always been the case.

    I took an example email that had been sent by Mac Mail but was unseen on another web client, and then searched directly on the email server* im the IMAP folder and it was not found. This meant Mac Mail had not saved this there regardless of the setting above.

    * It's my server running Dovecot.

    Hi,

    I tried a Rebuild last week.  In fact all it did was empty the mailboxes. After 45 mins of waiting I had to disable and enable all IMAP accounts,and then they came back, excluding the aforementioned Sent folder items.

    I don't have rules nor filtered views.

    Any more ideas?

    How are the 'other' mail clients. configured with respect to their own sent folders?

    All use same Sent IMAP folder . note that Mac Mail can see all their messages saved in the Sent folder. But not vice verse

    If mail account is corrupted then to sort out the issue :

    First copy mails in V3 folder for El Capitan , V2 folder for yosemite .

    Click on go > hold option key don't release it > click on library > then find folder mail > right click there only on mail folder > an options will be there , click on copy mail

    Then right click on extreme right i.e. blank space > click on paste item .

    Entire mails are copied into V3 folder drag and drop V3 folder on desktop don't delete it .

    Next , most important step is open mail app > mail preferences select IMAP account & click on minus sign that is on bottom side . so IMAP account is deleted .

    Now , create a IMAP account once again then take your cursor to top menu bar file >  click on import mailboxes > import data from > select apple mail > click on continue - select the back drop folder & choose new .

    A new folder with all mails will appear in mail side bar in fresh IMAP account .

    But one easy method is there you can drag & drop V3 folder in pen drive .

    Then delete corrupted IMAP account & form fresh IMAP account .once again insert pen drive in the system - open it & drag n drop V3 folder .

    Do you have any other IMAP accounts, and if so, does the same thing happen? If necessary, activate iCloud Mail to test.

    No, just a clarification: Sent folders are never IMAP, they are SMTP, but with an account accessed by IMAP protocols they should synchronize with the client in use.

    I have 3 IMAP accounts set up. Google + 2 from my own server. They all exhibit the same behaviour.

    I don't have icloud. Never used this.

    Sent messages are stored on an IMAP server only when they are sent via the SMTP server linked with the IMAP account in its settings. Are you sure that's what is happening?

    When you sign in to an IMAP account via the webmail interface, do you see the sent messages there?

    Hi everybody,

    I have discovered the cause of the missing emails.

    The usual default for IMAP folder Sent, Trash on all my email clients ( K9, Thunderbird, Roundcube ) are

    Sent -> Sent

    Trash -> Trash

    However in Mac world this is the case:

    Sent -> Sent Messages ( I think )

    Trash -> Deleted Messages

    These never existed on my IMAP server until I started with Apple.  All my missing emails were in those folders, which I have put into the correct IMAP folders.

    Now mystery is over.

    But how can this fixed? How can I force Mac Mail to use Sent and Trash instead of Sent Messages and Deleted Messages?  ( I know I can designated special folders in Dovecot [imap server I use], but should prefer to know how to do this in Mac Mail.  I poked around and don't see where this can be set.

    If not, I'll carry on use the AirMail beta, but Airmail is not a very business focused and quite awkward.
