Q: Macbook model MC207LL/A-Oct 2009

Greetings;

I have seen this older model online and was thinking of getting it to get my husband and I used to the Apple system without paying out alot at first.

It is a 2GB 250 GB storage. Core 2 Duo 2.26 What can it be upgaded to? 8GB or 4GB?

Also, if you have a lot of window files can they be viewed on there or do you need a differant app for it?

I would like to hear thoughts, etc on this machine before we get it.

I already have a mini ipad and so are somewhat introduced to the Apple environment-but have not had an apple laptop and so that is why for the questions.

Thank you,

Carol

"window" files  is kind of generic.   what exactly do you mean by window files.  You can open Microsoft Word files for instance in a numbwr of Apps including microsoft's own Word app for Mac.  Beyond that, it depends on the files you wish to open.

With that said, personally I think that Macbook is not too old to be of any real use. It will not be able to update to macOS sierra when its released in the fall, and is essentially left behind.

If possible try to go for a slightly newer laptop, 2010 upwards would be my suggestion.

I have found an Apple Macbook 7.1-Mac A1342 from May 2010 with El Capitan in it already-it is 2GB-but I have found that it can be upraded to up to 8GB-I may upgrade to 6GB-3GB each slot. That machine will be able to upgrade to Sierra when it comes out.

There are no 3GB memory modules.  If you want to upgrade to 6GB, it will need to be 2GB in one slot, and 4GB in the other slot.   That macbook can go up to 16GB actually.

That would be a better choice yes.

As to the current O.S. its quite irrelevant what it currently has. Any OS past Mountain Lion is tied to the Apple ID that downloaded it and cannot legally be transferred  to a new owner.

The original owner needs to restore the Macbook back to factory condition, and that means installing the O.S. it shipped with. You can then update to whatever it supports yourself. But it cannot be sold with El Capitan on it.  If you do buy it like that, it will be tied to the previous owners Apple ID, and will cause several issues.

The original owner must follow this support document before selling the MacBook.

I just purchased a more update model-a Macbook Pro Mid 2012. The one I am getting in is 8GB Ram with a 256 SSD Hard drive. I have been told that it will update to Sierra when it is time. I got square trade warranty for startes but, I will register it with my apple account to see if I can get some kind of Apple Care.

Depending a lot on the actual details of the computer you have bought, it may or may not be

a product for which you could buy an extended AppleCare plan. You need not try to register

it to find out; either it has Apple coverage as-new, or it does not. If not, it won't be able to.

A previously owned unit with timed-out coverage, may not.

If the computer is new (not new-to-you) it would have a complementary Apple guarantee.

And if so, then it could qualify for an AppleCare extended plan. Check out AppleCare site.

If new, it would have an Apple warranty for a limited time; and that could be found here:

    Good luck in any event...!

Carol, that macbook is at it's limit. I had a white Macbook 2.4 Ghz 4 gig ram, plenty of power to run the other OS's but Apple put a cap on it so I went and bought a new MacBook Pro. You can still surf the net and do word processing and such but it's over for that MB, everything is outdated. I check BestBuy's site and their trade-in program gave me 128$ for it, not cash but a gift card. I found a MacBook that was on sale and put that gift card on it as well so I go a pretty good deal on a new one.

    Good luck.
