Q: Having problems with my iPod classic

Hello, I have a 160 GB, 6th Generation iPod classic and just yesterday I was putting some new music on my iPod and noticed my iTunes starts lagging a couple times. When I ejected my iPod, all my music including the new music had disappeared. I'm currently on Windows 10 and with the newest version of iTunes (there are no further updates available for iTunes). I did a couple resets (by pressing the middle button and menu button simultaneously) in hopes of my music coming back (the only reason I did this is because something similar happened before and doing the reset magically worked recovering all my music) but it unfortunately didn't work this time. A couple hours later my iPod was in the Apple logo screen and kept self resetting and wasn't going past the Apple logo screen. I tried doing the diagnostic mode and that didn't work. I also put my iPod in disk mode and my computer sensed that my iPod was plugged in but iTunes wasn't opening. When I had iTunes open and tried plugging in my iPod (while in disk mode) it starts freezing. Everytime I have my iPod plugged in without being in disk mode it keeps resetting and showing the same Apple logo, only the screen is dimmed when plugged in and bright when not plugged in. I even let my iPod die through all the continuous resetting but that didn't help. I even tried formatting in hopes of restoring it through iTunes but that didn't work. So now I'm not sure what to do because it keeps resetting and won't get past the Apple logo and iTunes isn't picking it up.

Thank you for your time and if anyone can give any help it would be very appreciated..

See Re: Corrupt iPod classic. Can you get access to the HDD stats, and if so what are they?

Yes of course, the results are as follows:

    Retracts: 134

    Reallocs: 1

    Pending Sectors: 19

    PowerOn Hours: 173

    Start/Stops: 1470

    Temp: Current 25c

    Temp: Min 21c

    Temp: Max 51c

The numbers don't look too bad, but if the iPod needs to access something in that group of 19 pendings on startup, and can't, that might be why the device is resetting. Try the DFU restore or reformat methods. Once the pendings are released it should work normally again.

Thank you for suggesting the DFU restore, it seems that my iTunes finally recognized my iPod and is attempting to "Restore" my iPod now. Let's hope this works.

Okay so it says "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1439)." Any suggestions what I can do from here?

Try the reformat option, or ask a Mac owning friend to try restoring it, then you can restore it again when you get it back. Both approaches should free up the 19 pending sectors. You want to check these have all been converted to reallocs before trying to load up content.

Never mind, it appears all I had to do was make sure my iPod wasn't in recovery mode and then it was able to restore. It's now been successfully restored to factory settings. Thank you so much for your help tt2

Hey there tt2, hope all is well with you. So my iPod classic is still giving me some problems unfortunately, even after restoring it to factory settings a couple times through iTunes (latest version). Here are the messages that appear when my iPod is connected to iTunes:

    • iTunes could not copy "song name" to the iPod "Jonathan's iPod" because an unknown error occurs (-50; although I've gotten -53) <----- This is the first error message; this is what has continually messed up my iPod at any random moment to the point where I can't do anything but restore it to factory settings. This happens randomly with any random song I try dragging into my iPod which has never given me any problems in the past.
    • Updating files on 'Jonathan's iPod'. Finishing sync /// Syncing iPod. Do not disconnect. <----- These are actually two messages, they go back and forth on iTunes. Does this every time right after the first error message which I know means that my iPod has messed up because I'm not able to add anything to my iPod. At this point my iTunes and iPod are frozen.
    • The iPod "Jonathan's iPod" cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found. <----- Does this sometimes when I eject my iPod through my computer instead of iTunes (because of iTunes being frozen) after it gives me the first error message.

Here is the SMART Data from doing the diagnostic:

    Retracts: 166

Reallocs: 303 <----- as you can see, this number has grown since the last time

    Pending sectors: 2

    PowerOn Hours: 212

    Start/Stops: 1670

    Temp: Current 30C

    Temp: Min 21C

    Temp: Max 51C

So at this point I'm not sure what to do. It has happened a couple times already at random moments. The last time before it happened again, it was perfectly fine and I had just finished putting a little over 5000 songs manually and after putting one random song my iPod just crashes by giving me that first error message, messing everything up. When it is already messed up and I manage to eject the iPod (which doesn't even eject properly because it resets right before it finishes the eject), I try and plug my iPod back into my computer (at this point it's already messed up but I try and see if I can put music again which doesn't work because I keep getting the first error message every time I do so) the loading wheel freezes which to me verifies I have to restore it again. Then right after it says "Verifying iPod" at the top which has never happened before but usually does after my iPod messes up and I reconnect it. In my iPod settings I never click the sync button, instead just the manually add music button. If I try to check the sync button the error messages only come faster. Sometimes right after dragging a song it will even make my iTunes freeze and my iPod will still show as connected with the loading wheel frozen, after this it will give me the same first error message. I really don't want to restore it again because first of all it took me so long to put those 5000+ songs, which is still less than a third of all my music and secondly I know the error message will come back because it keeps doing so.

Going back to my original post, it all started because of the first error message which led to all that. Even restored to factory settings this problem keeps coming back. Not sure if I should just try repairing my iPod with an online service that changes hard drives since I don't know how to do it or maybe just try and move my iTunes library to another laptop/computer to see if that'll help. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated and as always thank you so much.

The realloc count is still relatively low. I would suspect that an area of the disk is damaged and only once that is fully mapped out can things go back to normal. This may take several attempts at reformatting the device and reloading data, revealing a new fault, and starting over. The classic has the potential for over 16,000 reallocations, so I'd be inclined not to give up on it while the count is still less than a few thousand.

iTunes has also given me a message about a disk error but I see what you mean. So you're telling me it can take several attempts and right now I have to do one of those attempts because once my iPod gives me the first error message, there's nothing I can do from there which is the case now. I haven't been reformatting it, only restoring it to factory settings. Should I restore and then reformat or the other way around? And how should I reformat it? I know you can format under 'my computer' but I'm not sure about reformat unless they're the same thing. Should I just do this a couple times or just whenever my iPod messes up? Thank you tt2

iTunes itself doesn't always seem to reset all of the data during a restore. You can try and before putting any data on see if all of the pendings have been converted. You can also try a quick format in Windows, or expose all hidden files in Windows Explorer, delete all that you can find and empty the recycle bin. As long as you've cleared all pendings before trying to load data again you should have a good chance of getting your media back on the device.
