Q: My Apple password doesn't work when I try to download Flash Reader

I have been trying over and over to download Flash Player on my Mac OS 10.9.5 and when I try to open the installer, I am asked for my password and it doesn't work. Yet, I used the password to enter this community and it did work. I am using Chrome as my browser. Any help to accomplish this will be much appreciated.

    Hello Gail Rooney,

I'm not 100% sure if you are referring to your admin account on your Mac, if you weren't let me know as I'd love to provide assistance with anything else. Anyway, if you do need to reset your password for your admin account so you can let Flash Player install just follow these steps and you should be able to reset the password for the admin account. You will need to restart your computer. Then, press the Command and R keys at the same time when the grey screen appears and hold them until you see the Apple logo. A small loading bar will appear under the logo. Then wait for the recovery mode to load Click the Utilities tab in the top menu bar, select Terminal, type resetpassword and press Enter. Close out the Terminal window and behind it you will find the Reset Password utility. All you have to do now is select the user account you want to reset, enter a new password or leave it blank and click Save. Then, restart again and login to your admin account with the new password you just set.

I followed your instructions exactly and was able to change my password. However, when I restarted and tried to log in to my account with the new password, I got several messages, one after another, starting with this: com.apple.icloudHelper.XPC wants to use the login Keychain.

I am not terribly computer knowledgeable. I simply want to download Flash Player so I can learn about Adobe Photoshop CC. Do you have any idea why all this is happening? It is so complicated to me.

If you did not get the most recent Adobe Flash Player from the official Adobe site, abandon the download that you have, and go get the official version.

You must quit  all browsers, and System Preferences while attempting to install the latest Adobe Flash Player. The password prompt that it issues is for your login/administrative password that you use to sign into your Mac.

Once Flash Player is installed/updated, and a browser launches with the adobe dot com web site, you are done. You can check for future Flash updates via the System Preferences : Flash Player panel : Updates tab.

I went to Utilities folder the only way I know how. I restarted my computer, pressed COMMAND R. The only choices given in the Utilities folder are -

    • Firmware Password Utility
    • Network Utility
    • Terminal

I am NOT computer savvy. So please help me with step by step directions on how to get to Keychain Access.

    Thanks

While booted normally, go to your Applications folder. Inside is a folder named Utilities. Keychain Access is in the Utilities folder.

I Really appreciate the help you all were. However, I spent several hours with two different senior techs at Apple and finally got it fixed.

Eric, I would if I could. The senior tech who helped me was Angela. The first one I talked to didn't help much. I guess my advice would be to keep calling back until you get a senior tech who knows the answer, unless you can ask for Angela. Good luck.

Gail's problem was different from mine, though we were/are trying to do the same thing:   download the latest Adobe Flash Player to Safari on a Mac running Mavericks.  My Apple password, which I have just changed as part of the effort, does not work when I am asked for it, to download the app.  Any ideas ?  Thanks !

Try your user/admin password, not your Apple ID password.
