Q: what is airportd in the activity monitor. Is there a list defining what these processes are?
I have a process "airportd" that appears in my activity monitor periodically and locks the system. I don't know where it is coming from nor can I find a definition of what is is our why it is running.

The process airportd is the Airport daemon. This process is used for managing your wifi interface, which Apple previously called Airport. Are you using WiFi on this Mac?
