Q: Photostream autosynching

I had set up my mac to auto synch photos from iPads and iPhones... like an auto backup system for family photos.  When images were shot on a device it would synch to Photostream and then Photos would auto sync to the Mac.  I thought this had been working for years, but now through more research here on Apple, it look like it's not supported any longer.  Is this an attempt to force users to purchase ICloud storage, or was i completely mistaken that I had done this in the past?

Nobody is forcing you to do anything. You can still use Photo Stream for free and not pay for storage. It was never a backup for your photos.

Photo Stream will now store your photos for free for either 30 days or 1000 photos, whichever happens first. No videos and the photos will be downsized.

The functionality of Photo Stream has changed.

    • My Photo Stream is still working like before in Aperture  and iPhoto, as long as you enable it on your mobile devices and in Aperture or iPhoto.
    • But My Photo Stream has been implemented a bit differently in Photos for Mac.  In Aperture and iPhoto we can have selective settings to download from My Photo Stream but not to upload to My Photo Stream. We can no longer have a one-way stream from the iPhone or iPad to the Mac, it is automatically syncing in both directions. New photos imported to the Mac will upload to my Photo Stream and new photos from the devices will  download.

What also has changed is, that you will not see a My Photo Stream album and a Camera Roll album on your iPhone or iPad, if you enable iCloud Photo Library. Then My Photo Stream will be working silently in the background. Also Photos for Mac will not show the My Photo Stream album, if you enable iCloud Photo Library.  If you want to use My Photo Stream to transfer your photos between the devices, but not have all photos in a paid iCloud Photo Library,  enable only My Photo Stream on your devices, but not iCloud Photo Library. Then you will be seeing a My PhotoStream album on your iPhone and your Mac like before.
