Q: Mac Pro 3.1 black screen, loud fans

Hello community,

I have a Mac Pro 3.1, 2008 dual 2.8ghz computer. I bought it cheaply as the original owner claimed it had a problem where it would randomly sleep, and a hard reset was neccesary in order to restart the computer. On turning on the computer myself I soon saw what he meant, all of a sudden, quite randomly the screen would drop out entirely and about 8 seconds later the fans go on full whack. This could happen before the computer boots, or could happen 15 minutes later. Sometimes it would happen more often when say I watched a youtube clip on full size in 720/1080p. This shut down can only be stopped by hard resetting the unit.

Originally i thought it might of been the graphics card (Nvidia 8800 GT) which upon researching had found out there have been issues with this graphics card for other people in the past, however they speak of glitchy graphics, over-heating and 'baking' the card. I tested the temps on the gfx card and they were not abnormally high at all. Infact on monitoring all the temperatures when the computer was on i noticed no abnormality with any temps apart from maybe the north bridge which was max 62 C when idling. But my macbook pro hits 75 C on the CPU when using intensive software (logic pro etc). I also tested the gfx card in both available pcie slots aswell as cleaning out excess dust from the gfx card using compressed air.

The computer has a WD velociraptor 128gb 10k rpm HDD installed. I tested the computer with a 128gb SSD which i know worked. I managed to install snow leopard from a DVD onto it before a crash and the computer worked for maybe 20-25 mins then it blacked out again. Not the hard drive then. Tested all the ram (6gb), moved them around etc, no red dimm lights on either board. Not the ram.

The only main components left really are the power supply and the logic board. I have no red leds on the logic board lighting up, so no obvious failures. And when the computer is on it works a treat.

Does this sound like the PSU is dying/dead? I thought this could be an easy software fix, but am now chasing the hardware train....

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

Cheers!

You appear to have a lot of junk installed, including cleanMy Mac, which is known to make Macs unstable.

Please download and run etrecheck and post the output back here.

    Hi Grant Bennet-Alder,

I didn't know i have installed the Clean MyMac, may be it was did by the site http://putlocker.is/

I found there was a dim light on after the black screen yesterday, i replaced 2x 4GB with my old Ram 2 x 1GB. But the black screen and loud fan happened again today.

Please see the Etrecheck report below, if i do a fresh OSX reinstall, will this problem go away.

by the way, I have physically cleaned the mac, no more dust built inside.

    Again, thank you for helping.

You appear to be running an SSD as your Boot Drive, but TRIM is not active. This could produce an ugly situation where your drive fills up with deleted data it cannot get rid of, and slows to a crawl.

Apple provided the terminal command to allow third-party SSD drives to use TRIM:

    sudo Trimforce enable

and you should use that command and say yes to the disclaimers (and it requires a Restart).

You have this thing trying to load and failing, whatever it is:

        ES1000Service: Path: /Library/StartupItems/ES1000Service

I don't know what this launch agent is. It may be adware:

You appear to be running air parrot. You should consider shutting that off until this problem has passed.

You are running this extremely dubious add-on. Cleaned memory means a slow Mac. You want your Mac's memory to be its most efficient -- nearly full, just the way the Mac designers planned it should be:

        [loaded]    com.fiplab.MemoryCleanHelper

        [running]    com.fiplab.memoryclean.206752

    ...and it is crashing:

Take a pair of RAM out see what happens. If you get another panic saying a lot of banks were reporting problems then reinstall those two and take another pair out.

    Hi Grant,

I have uninstalled memory clean,  but it didn't help.

Do you think i should do reinstall OSX?

You appear to still have half of the memory cleaned still installed, and tasks are being cancelled because of lack of memory

You are also running VMware. If you do not use Windows daily, it might be worthwhile to eliminate VMware as a potential problem by un-installing it for now.

and removed the old BT card from my MB, Which means i used to have 2 x BT card on the MB.

If they are the same age then it is possible for both to fail.

If they "fail" I the same slots maybe a slot problem

    Hi lllaass,

I have pulled all rams out. started with pairs.

the Mac Pro won't start, power light flashing. and the riser board with the dime light on in slot 1. I went through all Rams which i bought from this seller 2 years ago, http://www.ebay.com/itm/32GB-8X4GB-MEMORY-APPLE-MAC-PRO-3-1-WORKSTATION-2008-MA9 70LLA-DDR2-800-PC2-6400-/231061729989?ha…

apparently, I'm just using the old ram 2x1gb, which does start the computer.

Do you think this is the symptom of the faulty rams  (8pcs x 4gb )?
