Q: Slide shows with collages

I Like the way that photo albums on the iPad contain collages or multi photo pages.  Is there a program available to use collages in a slide show on my MacBook Pro?

Mac OS X (10.5.5)

You can created slideshows, using different themes, right in Photos app. Similar to how you create photo books.

The built in screen savers in OS X can also use your images from Photos in various collage.

BTW, you posted in the Photos forum, so I'm assuming the device list in your footer is out of date.

Depending on your system you can also use the screensaver (System preferences > Desktop & Screensaver) to present selected folders of photos as a slideshow. The themes are similar to the slideshow themes in Photos on your iPad.  For example:

If you use the Photos.app (in OS X 10.10.3 or newer) you can also add music and title slides.

If you are still running a system without Photos for Mac, you can create slideshows in iPhoto.

Not with the screensaver method. That is just for easy viewing.  If you want to burn the slideshow to a DVD, create it in Photos for Mac or iPhoto, then use the Export command to save it as a video file.

If you want to play the DVD in a DVD player you need authoring software, iDVD, Burn, or similar to burn the video to a DVD. Otherwise you can only burn a data DVD.

To burn the video DVD see the links below:

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?

Once you create the slideshow, you can save it as a video. Again, you can do all that within Photos.

Burning a DVD might be a bit more involved. If you want to burn the video as data (for use by other computer), then you can do it right from the Finder - no problem. An easier way to distribute the video might be thru cloud services.

If, however, your intention is to burn a DVD that can be played by DVD players, then you have to "author" the DVD. You might already have the application to do this. It's called iDVD.

If you want to just watch the slideshow on your own TV, look into purchasing Apple TV, It will give you direct access to Photos, without the need for DVDs. Check for compatibility with your computer Mac OS X version (Apple menu > About this Mac).

The Photos slideshow themes that have college like slides are Origami, Reflections, Sliding Panels and Magazine.

Export the slideshow out of Photos as a QT movie file via the Export button in the upper right hand corner of the toolbar. Select 480p as the format.

Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
