Q: Music disappearing after not renewing Apple Music membership?

So just this morning my Apple Music membership ran out and with that went about 75% of my music...

Not the music that I had downloaded through Apple Music. Music that I already had on my computer and device.

This is not the first time something like this has happened and so I'm thinking of not renewing it any more if I am constantly going to have problems like this.

A few more details:

- Whole albums are missing on my phone and most albums have only 1-3 songs remaining.

- Of all the albums remaining, around 5% are still fully intact.

- Most of my music has come from CD's I've purchased or borrowed from a friend.

I'm hoping someone is able to help me find a reason for this, as it is very frustrating and after happening a couple times I'm not very happy with Apple's services.

    Hello asko1938,

Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Communities. It seems you have an issue with some music disappearing after your Apple Music membership expired.

With the introduction of Apple Music, changes were made to the way music is stored and listened to on your devices. When you end your Apple Music Membership by turning off Automatic Renewal, your subscription will automatically stop at the end of the current billing cycle. This will remove any songs from Apple Music on your device.

Since you specifically stated that these missing songs aren't songs or albums from Apple Music, this may be as simple as some confusion about the settings. I will give you some things to check to see if the songs really are missing, or just not being currently displayed. Please open the article below and check the section titled "View just songs, albums, and playlists that you downloaded to your device". Once you ensure you can see all music, or all downloaded music for offline play, does your music show back up?

Add music from the Apple Music catalog to your library on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC for offline play

If not, was your device synced to a Mac or PC with iTunes? iTunes has an auto sync feature, that will sync or make the two devices match. This means, whatever is in iTunes, will replace what is on the device. If your songs that are missing are not on that computer in iTunes, they will be removed. You can disable this feature and always manually sync items. In the following article, check the section under "Turn off syncing in iTunes" and then use the rest of the article to manually sync your songs, albums, and playlists.

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB

    Cheers!

    Hi Eric,

So I've tried changing the settings back and forward to try and reveal any hidden music but nothing seems to be happening so far.

For example I have an album called "Force Fed Lies" by "Dirge Within." this is an album I have imported from a CD into iTunes. The only songs showing up are songs 5 & 11.

I imagine there may have been a problem while removing my Apple Membership and the OS having trouble distinguishing between which music to delete and which to keep but this should not have happened. As I said, it has deleted approximately 75% of the music that was previously on my phone. Music that is in my iTunes and had been synced to my phone.

All of the music that was on my phone is still on my computer in iTunes.

After the last time my phone was synced I did uncheck some albums in my iTunes, but after going through my phone and iTunes together it seems that there isn't any distinguishing factor between affected and unaffected albums.

    Thanks.
