Q: My iPhone 6S+ has started deleting photos from Photo Stream when I delete them from the Camera Roll

This never used to happen and as I understand it this is not supposed to happen.  Any suggestions?

Do you also have iCloud Photo Library enabled?

If content is being deleted from your Photo Stream, you must be running into the 30 days or 1000 photo limit on the Photo Stream.

Thanks for the suggestion but it's not that.  If I take a new photo, it appears in the camera roll and then shortly thereafter appears in photo stream as it should. But then if I delete that photo from my camera roll it is also deleted from photo stream on all my devices right away. That's not supposed to happen and it never used to happen. It just started happening and I can't think of anything I might have done to cause the change.  It's still a mystery.

Let's be specific.  It is possible to have iCloud Sharing turned OFF but iCloud Photo Library turned ON.  All iCloud Sharing means is the ability to create Shared Photo Streams.

So the key question you need to answer is, do you have iCloud Photo Library turned on?  That is the top setting within Photos & Camera.  If this is turned ON, then what you describe is normal behavior.  You should probably verify this setting on all your devices.

Well, with those settings I would not expect My Photo Stream to be changed when you delete a photo from Camera Roll, so this is either a bug or by some odd design decision.

What you might try is to enable iCloud Photo Sharing, then create a Shared Photo Stream for photos that you want your other devices to have access to.  You don't have to actually share the Photo Stream with anyone, you can keep it to yourself.  By doing that, deleting from Camera Roll will not delete from a Shared Photo Stream.  I realize this is a manual process to have to copy photos into a Shared Stream, but if My Photo Stream is behaving this way it might be a workaround until resolved.

In the meantime, try some of the following:

    • Take a photo with your iPad, do you see the same behavior with My Photo Stream if you delete from the iPad's Camera Roll?
    • Try resetting your iPhone, or do a backup and restore.
    • If none of these yield results, tell Apple:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I don't see this in my devices.

Here is my "test" setup. iPod Touch on 9.32 and an iMac running El Capitan. Both have Photo Stream only enabled.

If I take a photo with my iPod Touch, it loads to Photo Stream. As expected.

Then I see the behaviour you're seeing. In Photos on my Mac (with Photo Stream only) if I remove a photo from my iPod, it is deleted from my Mac in real time.

I can't say this is different behaviour for me as I use the full iCloud Photo Library on all my devices.

Here is the prompt I see on my iPod as I delete.

That's a big difference, using iCloud Photo Library is not comparable to not using it.

    • With iCloud Photo Library, you don't have a "Camera Roll" to delete from, and everything is in sync so that if you delete a photo it is deleted everywhere.
    • Without iCloud Photo Library, Camera Roll and My Photo Stream are independent, such that you can delete from one without affecting the other.  The only syncing is My Photo Stream across your devices.  This is the OP's setup, but somehow Camera Roll deletions are affecting My Photo Stream, and that's not supposed to happen.
