Q: Is 8 or 16 GB of RAM appropriate?
Hello everyone,
I just bought my first mac a few days ago, it is a mid 2012 MacBook Pro, here are the basic specs:
CPU: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
RAM: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Hard Drive: 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
I'm looking to upgrade my RAM to 8 GB or 16 GB and my Hard Drive to an SSD. I intend to use my computer heavily, to include running computations, playing games and rendering 3d models. My question: would 16 GB of RAM be an appropriate upgrade or will it be excessive because my CPU is so marginal? So in other words, will the 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 be able to utilize 16 GB of RAM or is that a waste of money? Thanks in advance for all the help!!

In addition to Crucial there is another well respected RAM supplier to consider. That is OWC (Macsales). Although Crucial is the more conservative of the two if OWC says16Gb too, you can be pretty sure it will work. The site has a one to one telephone option but be sure you have your machine on and showing its make up to be sure you are giving them the right details. As we don't know your location you may need to Google 'Macsales' to get the office for your country.
