Q: Motion 5 text doesn't work in FCP

Hi, I have just bought Motion to complete a rush job requiring 'fancy' text effect overlays on 10 promotional clips. I have made some sequences in Motion 5, very simple ones using their templates...they all play fine in motion. When I save and bring back to Final Cut they don't work at all...for example only the first letter is appearing from a 'deal in' template effect. I have tried a reboot of the computer. I am running the latest version of Final Cut on a year old Macbook Pro laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), null

When I save and bring back to Final Cut

What does that mean? What exactly are you doing? Are you publishing parameters? Give details.

You can also export a title animation using the ProRes 4444 codec and lay in FCP as a piece of connected video.

Hi Tom, sorry, I have never used Motion until today (I have used other similar programmes so not a complete novice) but I am creating the effect in Motion then going FILE > SAVE AS > selecting a category and name > PUBLISH and waiting for the alert to say this has been successful before opening Final Cut.

As a footnote, I was selecting a basic title and choosing 'open in motion' from FCP. I just just tried opening a new project in Motion and it seems to have imported successfully that way. Is this the way I should proceed now? i.e. rather than entering Motion from 'Titles' in FCP.

You should be able to do it either way. If you enter from FCP and make changes make sure that the changes you make are published back to FCP so you get everything you altered back in FCP.

Ok, I can't seem to get it to work going in from FCP even though it says it has been published successfully. I often have to randomly shut down and re-open FCP  when it behaves strangely (often when importing material, it won't show any files if I insert an SD card after loading FCP, the card has to be inserted first) so maybe just a weird glitch. I can do it by entering Motion first which is all I need for this project, it's a last minute rush so I will do it the way I can get it to work for now! Thanks.

Hello again, Tom. I am still having problems. I am trying to modify some of the pre made up titles templates fromFinal Cut Pro in Motion. I click on the title in FCP and ask to open in motion. I am then able to make a few tweaks, no problems. I then do the save as and publish to FCP but the titles are halfway off screen in FCP. I have double checked in Motion and the changes I have made are well within the screen size. It doesn't matter how much smaller I make them, they always appear oversized in FCP. I can't 'transform' them to make them smaller in FCP because some letters are cropped off. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Right up top, saying you're familiar with other gpx programs and expecting to be even remotely proficient on M5 in a day is a fantasy. Its like saying "I can drive a car pretty well, so I should be able to muddle my way through brain surgery." M5 is a massive, incredibly capable and complex graphics program that is every bit as capable as AfterEffects - yet works nothing like it at all.

Check the project settings in both programs and make sure your frame-rate and frame-size are the same. Check your "view" settings in m5 and make sure you are working with the entire canvas. Check your playback ranges and make sure you're exporting the entire timeline and not just a small segment. Don't bother with "save as" in this case if you're making just one font-change because each time you do that, it creates another entry into your available fonts in X. If you want to clutter up your text chicklet in X, that's entirely up to you - but I'd rather just export the M5 project as a ProRes4444 with alpha, and then drop it into my X timeline as a video clip.

Thanks all helpful, luckily I wasn't expecting to be proficient in a day, just enough to do a few library effects which worked really well once I discovered I had the canvas set wrong   It looks like a great programme and I look forward to exploring it more. I used Boris Red a lot back in the day so it has been a little helpful in getting my head round the 3D way of working.  Good tip re exporting with an alpha channel. I will try that then next time. Thanks again
