Q: iPod Nano 7G suddenly not recognized by Windows 8.1

My iPod Nano 7G has worked perfectly ever since I bought it over a year ago.  Suddenly a few weeks ago, when I plugged it into a USB port to sync and charge, my Windows 8.1 laptop came up with the message "USB Device not recognized".  I've already tried several proposed fixes, including deleting and reinstalling iTunes and all other Apple software, and making sure Microsoft Update was doing it's thing correctly.  Also tried every USB socket on my laptop with the same result.  So now my laptop won't even charge my iPod, and I cannot sync my music and playlists.  Other than this issue, my iPod Nano is working just fine, so I suspect the issue lies in either iTunes or my operating system (Windows 8.1).  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Hi Dale,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I understand that iTunes has stopped recognizing your iPod for syncing. I know that it's important to be able to actually get content onto your iPod, so I'm happy to provide you with some direction to resolve this.

While you've done a lot of great troubleshooting already, be sure to check out all of the steps outlined in this article as well:

If iTunes doesn‘t recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

Once you've gone through all of the steps listed there, you'll be back in business. Cheers!

    Hello again!

    Thanks for the tips, sarah_s1!

My problem went away spontaneously after my post two weeks ago.  Yesterday the issue reappeared.  What seems to be happening is the that Apple USB driver is somehow disappearing under the listed USB drivers in Device Manager.  Not sure what's causing it to disappear, but the only thing system-related that I did prior to both occurances was to download and install updates from Windows Update.  Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the followup information.

Since this has been sort of sporadic, test this with another known good cable as well, to ensure you've eliminated that as a possibility. If the issue continues, then we'd recommend reaching out to Microsoft support, since the issue has occurred again after installing Windows Updates. You can find their support page here:
